SHALL RATES BE INCREASED? That railroads aré being hard hit by 1ncreuln§ cost of wages, fuel and other materials was claimed in testimony introduced before the In- terstate Commerce Commission a few days ago by the Northern Pacific in the petition for a fifteen per cent increase in freight rates. The largest single item of increased operating expense is chargeable to the higher cost of materials amounting to over five million dollars. Testimony introduced before the national rail governing body shows!J. that the Northern Pacific’'s increased operating cost for one year, based. on conditions as they exist today, total $12,297,433.62. These figures, however, do not take inte consideration further increases that are likely to occur. . In the items of increased operating expenses the road’s evidence showed that wage ‘increases made necessary by the Adamson law reach the enormous sum of $4,160,094.08. Additional expenses for fuel, based on present prices, amounts to $2,381,247. Other items include increased taxation. If at the hearing on June 18, whether the increase should be granted, it is learned the incredse is justified, such should be done. The roads should not be hampered during the war crisis and the Adamson law cer- tainly put a big dent in the finances of the roads affected. WHEN WE'LL ASK FOR IT ‘We are in receipt of a large well printed press sheet issued by the publicity department of the National Wholesale Liquor Dealers’ associa- tion, national office in Cincinnati, O., said sheets containing several ar- ticles and a large cartoon for use in the Daily Pioneer. On the sheet is a notation that plates of the matter advocating the cause of the booze gang would gladly be furnished free of cost to the Pioneer, upon request. When we make a request for any of that kind of stuff to run in any paper we are editing there will be grass a foot high on the graves of the gang behind the booze game. | —_— i Now that the seaweed has been removed from the lake it might be in order to rise and suggest that the septic tank be placed in a proper condition. It had been over a year ago since it was cleaned until a few days ago. And it is stated upon good authority the tank needs attention. June 18 to 25 has been designated Red Cross week throughout the nation and state. Bemidji must-do her “bit.” Help the local chapter. The ladies and male members also are going to help you help the Amer- ican boys who are going to the front for humanity’s sake. So the kaiser offered thirty billions to the entente with the inten- tion of coming over to America and conquering somebody? Of all the insane ideas the disordered brain of the kaiser has evolved that is about the limit. The kaiser’s *roof” needs repairing. American newspaper readers have been perusing accounts of what the foreign nations have encountered in living during the war and the United States is going to resort to much of the same thing of necessity. It is a case of give, give, give. Nothing else. And just about when the United States gets set for a wallop Japan will square herself and when America and Japan start there'll be another tune sung in the kaiser's domain. In a recent issue of the Minneapolis Journal appeared a request to give the addresses of the state normal schools and in the list given ap- pears Bemidji. Ouch! That rain follows great battles 1s a tradition that has persisted for centu- ries, and the fact, if fact it is, has usually been attributed to the concus- sion of the air caused by heavy artil- lery firing. But a correspondent of Nature cities a passage from Plutarch telling of a battle of Caius Marius against, the Teutons in 102 B. C, in which that ancient. historian, wrote: “It 18 well known that extraordipary rains, generally follow great battles,, as if_the gods decided to wash and purifs the earth or as §f blood and corruptjou by the m stu;g and heayy vapors the; engendered thickened the air, which is changed by the most trifling causes.” There was no artiliery in those days. It does beat all how we are doing away with old customs. You seldom see a man beat a carpet ‘any more in this day of rugs and mattings.—Florida Times-Union.
