PIKE FRY PLACED Crookston, Minn., June 5.—A total of 300,000 pike fry have been placed in the Red Lake river here by C. S. Giles, The fry were hatched at Be- midji. The hatchery at Bemidji has only been in operation for two years, but, according :to the officers in charge, who have been employed with the government for 14 years, the fry turned out this season at Be- midji are the best .he ever handled. As the result of the success of the small hatchery at Bemidji it is hoped by those who are interested, that congress will secure an appropria- tion for an adequate fish hatchery next season. As a rule only 50 per cent of the eggs placed in incubation develop, but of the 38,000,000 eggs used at Bemidji, 24,000,000 pike fry re- sulted. These are being distributed in public waters between Duluth and Crookston. -A million have already been placed in Maple Lake and an- other million have been placed in Lake Union and Lake Sarah.
