SPUDS $1 BUSHEL AT * FERGUS FALLS; WoW! Fargo, N. D, June 4.—While farmers in the Fergus Falls district of Minnesota are rushing their pota- toes to market to dispose of them be- fore potato = prices take another slump, and citizens of Fergus Falls are paying $1 a bushel, Fargo, a dis- tance of fifty-four miles from Fer- gus Falls, i3 paying 70 cents a peck, or $2.75 per bushel for old potatoes. BUY LIBERTY BOND, LABOR HEAD URGES Washington, June 4.—To encour- age activity by labor organizations on behalf of the Liberty loan next Wednesday, the special day set aside for workingmen in the bond selling campaign, Samuel Gompers, presi- dent of the American Federation of Labor, has addressed an appeal to unions. “To buy a Liberty bond,” said the statement, “is to support our coun- try and to subscribe to ideals which our country is forced to maintain by military force. “All workers and labor organiza- tions will find it advantageous to support this loan as extensively as lies within their' financial ability. Money for their sale is indespensable to the successful conduct of the war. Bond subscriptions, therefore, become a highly patriotic and intelligent way to render service to our republic and to the cause of democracy interna- tionally.” The federation’s executive council has subscribed to $10,000 worth of bonds. The enl'siment of school children of the United States in efforts to defeat the high cost of living by the greater production of vegetables in school gar- dens was considered at a recent meet- ing in Kansas City of the School Gar- den Association of America. It met as a part of the annual convention of the superintendency division of the Na- tional Education association. Plans were made by which agriculturists connected with city schools will obtain permission to use vacant lots and back yards for such cultivation, Similar work in connection with pub- lic schools had been undertaken in many cities, speakers explained, but in view of the present prices and the in- creased domestic needs a desire was expressed to increase the school gar- dening to the greatest extent possible. An exhibition of results attained by pupils of the Kausas City schools last summer in school and municipal gar- den cultivation was given. Madagascar’'s Two Climates. The island of Madagascar has two distinct climates, two classes of na- tives and two classes of fauna and flora. The island is about the size of France. Along the coast it is tropical and malarious, and the natives.are darker than in the interior. The in- terior is a high tableland and moun- tainous. There the climate is cooler and the natives smaller and lighter in color ‘than on the coast. But in the interior they are more intelligent, and they rule the island.
