FEAST OF WEEKS T0 START NEXT SUNDAY Shabuoth, or the Feast of Weeks, also called the Feast of the First Fruits, will be observed by Jews next Sunday and Monday. Shabuoth falls this year on Sun- day, May 27. Its name is derived from the fact that the Mosaic legis- lation does not prescribe the date of this festival as being definitely on such and such a day, or such and such a month, which is the case with the other festivals, but instead sim- ply states that seven fuli weeks are to be counted from tne time the Omer (a measure of grain as an of- fering) is brought. Hence, the name “The Festival of Weeks,” and also the name “Pentecost,” meaning “fiftieth,” since the festival is seven weeks or the fiftieth day after the second day of Passover, so fixed by the Rabbinic tradition.
