NO REFLECTION UPON MAYOR The opposition which some persons profess for the proposed new hand- bill distributing ordinance, scheduled to come up before the council for decisive action at its next meeting, is not held to mean any aspersion up- on Mayor Vandersluis, in that the measure gives the mayor sole power tc say what can and what can not be done, but it is held by some that the whole matter should not be vested in any one individual. As one expressed himself, “I am not afraid but that Vandersluis would be fair, but he isn’t always going to be mayor of the city.” Another expression was to the effect that so long as the Nord bill was now a law there was no need for any such ordinance. Still others are of the opinion it is a purely personal matter with some persons in hoosting such a measure. And the same line of discussion is heard anent the proposed ordinance concerning public speaking which also invests the power in a single per- son to say who may speak and upon what topics, etc., etc., it being pointed out that the Nord bill also curbs inflamatory orations and flannel mouth utterances of irresponsibles. The disposition of the ordinance rests solely with the council and it is up to the alderthen to decide. CARL SCHURZ AND THE HYPHEN (From a speech of Carl Schurz delivered in 1899) The German who make this country the home of his choice must soon learn to understand—and most do learn it immediately—that henceforth this is his country; that his welfare and that of his posterity are closely bound up in the welfare of this republic; that it should never enter the minds of him or his countrymen to form here a separate nationality; that as German born he has no exceptional rights and duties and interests of the American citizen under the free institutions of this republic, so as to exercise his political rights honestly and wisely for the public good; that his own freedom, his own rights and his own future are preserved most safely in the freedom, rights and future of the community, and that he owes the American republic-his fullest devotion, and if necessary, even his goods and his blood. TRAINS OF THOUGHT What we need for most of our trains of thought is more freights and fewer parlor cars. The average train of thought isn't big enough to carry a full sized opinion on any subject. * Most of them are forever going and never getting anywhere. What they need is a new schedule and g fresh time table. The greatest trouble is, though, that some men are too narrow-minded to accommodate broad-guage tracks for their trains of thought. Their equipment could all run on a gnat’s eyebow and never fall off. Take a look at your train of thought sometime. See if it is suffering 1 from any of these defects. If it is, flag it at once and see what can be done. “Let me suggest that every one who creates or cultivates a garden helps. and helps greatly to solve the problem of feeding of the Nation.”— President Wilson. wi MAPS & WORLD IN FOUR COLORS ALL BATTLE FRONTS \ COUPON Presented by the BEMIDJI PIONEER A sixteen page set of large scale, authentic maps on extra heavy super-caleadar paper at merely nominal cost.
