Any person born in the United States is a citizen of this country, re- gardless of where his parents were born. Who is an alien? Any person born outside the United States of parents not citizens of this country is an alien. How may these aliens become citizens? Any alien in this country, although he landed only yesterday, may go citizen. ‘When he makes such declaration he is given what are commonly called his “first papers.” After an alien has lived continuously in the United States five years, provided he has declared his intention and obtained his first papers, he may apply for his final papers. If he shows a fair understanding of the fundamentals of the government he is then granted full citizenship. If he has been here five years, he need only wait two years between first and second papers. Children born outside the United States are ci_tizens of this country if their parents are naturalized before the children become of legql age. An alien woman who marries an Americanfcitizen becomes an Amer- jcan citizen. Such citizenship lasts during marriage. In case the mar- riage is terminated by divorce or death, the woman still is an American citizen if she remains in the United States. An American woman who marries an alien loses her citizenship until such time as he becomes naturalized. The procedure to be followed by an alien who desires to become a citizen of the United States calls for considerable personal information. The alien should give his name, age, occupation, complexion, height, weight, color of hair, place and date of birth, present residence, what coun- try he emigrated from, name of vessel he came in, if married, the name of his wife, where she was born; he should declare an intention to renounce allegiance, the sovereign and country he is now subject to, give the port of his arrival in the United States and the date of arrival. After he has resided five years in the United States, he may apply for his final papers. He must go to the clerk of court, with two witnesses, both of whom are citizens, either from birth or naturalization, and fill out another blank. At that time he must give the number of his children, name, date and place of their birth and their present residence. The witnesses must have known him at least five years as a resident of the state, and certify that he is a person of good moral character. A person who believes in anarchy or polygamy will not be admitted to full citizenship. Because the United States does not permit its citizens to expatriate themselves in time of war, full citizenship in this country is not granted to an alien of any country at war with the United States. This does not prevent a German from declaring his intention of becoming an American citizen, nor of applying for full citizenship. Such applications are held in abeyance. A lady living in the north part of Bemidji (now don’t get nervous) invited us out to tea one evening this week, just one of those homey kind, you know, where you eat and not merely show how much you've read “in the book,” and sat us before one of the best menus we'd encountered in many moons. One of the notable features was a great big platter covered with poached eggs, the ki‘nd one dreams about, and we felt so flattered that if some one had cut our weights we'd gone straight up. The transfer of the Danish West Indies from Denmark to the United States was made in one day. By the deal several hundred thousand Danes were made Americans, and it reminds us of the story of how two men changed their nationality quicker than did the Danes. The two went up in a balloon and when quite aways up both fell out. One came down a rushin’ and the other struck a telephone wire and came down a pole. We took a good slant along the lake shore yesterday and came to the conclusion that it has great possibilities as a place to disport our rather slyph-like *figure,” but doggone if we sort of don’t hate to think of slip- ping on some submarine from the forest and peeling off a yard or two of the lining of our rather atmospheric bathing regalia. What we can't quite absorb through our rather sterling silvering hair, much less into what it grows upon, is why those booze makers be- lieve that the manufacture of liquor should be suspended during trouble- some times and not during peace. We'll bite. Why? In the Pioneer vesterday was a dispateh from Washington telling of a delegation of prominent (“prominent” is right) booze distillers suggesting that the manufacture of liquor be suspended during the period of interna- tional disturbances. Now wouldn't that set your cork to bobbing? Yesterday was Friday the 13th. We went to the Grand in the eve- ning and saw “What Happened to Jones™™ and we considered that we were lucky in getting through the day as well as we did. Marriage as a Job | I heard a girl in an elevator the oth- er day discussing with a sympathizing friend her differences with a floor- walker. i “Aw,” she said, “I don’t have to take any more sass off'n that gink. I'm goin’ to quit here anyhow. I'm goin’ to be married. No more work and no more bossing for me.” Any girl of her mental caliber who enters the married state is walking right into the hardest job she can ever hold down in her life and totally un- equipped for her position. Inside of a year, it she is as poor a wife as she has been a shopgirl, there will be an- other man hanging around the corner saloon trying to forget in a glass of cheap beer the confusion and the bad food in the flat at home. When she gleefully announced that she was go- ing to stop work the thought of the meals, the cleaning and the laundry had evidenily not occurred to her. And the floorwalker doesn’t live who can hand out orders like a husband. You have to take them from a hus- band, too, for you cannot quit your job of matrimony as easily as you can in a shop.—Elizabeth Sears in Har per's Magazine.
