We have stated that in that contract there was absolutely no provi- sion made for the payment of the bridge. There is no time specified in the contract when the work should be completed. It is stated the bridge is only about 26 per cent finished, and that it will be about next August before it is completed. The bridge is being paid for thus far by city warrants drawing 6 |3 per cent interest. . How nor where the money to pay for the bridge is to come from-was ever figured out. ¥ giees It was a case of let a contract for $22,772 and leave it to the tax- payers to figure out how they can pay for it. That’s the situation in a nutshell as it exists today as regards the bridge. It isn’t our duty to discuss any whys nor -wwherefors, nor essay any analysis of such, and we don’t intend to. The case is stated plainly and it is exactly as stated upon the surface. But— THAT BRIDGE HAS TO BE PAID FOR BY THE TAXPAYERS OF THE CITY OF BEMIDJI, and that's all there is to it. It would serve no good purpose to draw aside the curtain of the past. It would serve no good purpose to impune any ulterior motives nor to con- nect up any one in an unfavorabie light with what has happened. The city is “‘up against it” on that bridge proposition and it is now for the city to take care of. ‘We believe that every member of the council has the best interests of the city at heart and willing to co-operate with any or all to aid Be- midji in its attempts to progress as it should. We believe there isn’t an official of the city of Bemidji to whom the same does not apply. We see no good in living in the past of a new community grown in a few years from a virgin forest on a beautiful lake shore, with all its kaleidoscopic phases as the years passed on. Old scores, fancied grievan- ces, petty jealousies, personal feeling and hatred have no place in the busi- ness affairs of the city of Bemidji today. The people have selected the ones whom they desire to represent them as administrators of their busi- ness affairs and there is none to thwart their will even in the slightest. The administrative body of the city of Bemidji is a good one without exception. They are men far above the intelligence, ability and standing usually found in the council seats of cities, and there is not one but who, we believe, stands ready to do his duty by the city of Bemidji and its people. ) The status of the new bridge is going to be ascertained. No doubt about it. Just where it stands is to be determined. It should be done. The entire proposition should be spread out by the city administration that it may be seen in every detail by the representatives of the people. And when this is done and the mayor and aldermen are fully in- formed upon every phase we believe it should not be a difficult matter for them all to soberly discuss the situation as business men, without any per- sonal feeling whatever, and sanely evolve some solution of what is best for the taxpayers of Bemidji and for the city to do under the circumstances. | And we honestly believe that their judgment in the matter will be correct in every detail and acceptable to the great majority of the city of Bemidji. This? of course, is only ‘“‘as the editor sees it.” TUSETH SCHOOL OF MUSIC Teachers of Violin. Piano and Band Ins ents Phone 287-W.
