The Pioneer is an ardent advocate of patronizing Bemidji business men and business en terprises—buy it in Bemidji. And in this the Pioneer practices exactly what it preaches. Yesterday there came to the Pioneer, that which has often some to this newspaper, an advertisement from a large department store in St. Paul, the advertisement being an electrotype, requiring not the slightest expense in the setting. It contained 54 inches of space and it would have paid well to have accepted it. More was to follow. Yet it was an invitation for Bemidji people to send their money out of Bemidji to a distant city in patronage of a concern that has no interest in Bemidji, its' welfare nor its people, except insofar as it concerns ob- taining their money. The Pioneer believes the Bemidji merchants carry stocks as complete as one could wish for, up to the minute and at the right prices. They are of Bemidji. They live here, have their interests here, help pay for what Bemidji has and is going to have and deserve hearty co-operation in build- ing up the city. In this the Pioneer wants to do all within its power. It has repeatedly turned away hundred of dollars worth of business that would bring Bemidji’s business enterprises into competition with the large outside business interests. It believes in defending its home interests from outside encroachment and has and is doing so at a sacrifice to itself, be- lieving that it is worthy the confidence and support of those whose in- - terests it seeks to safeguard. THE PEOPLE ARE WISE TO 'EM There still seems to be the impression in the limited minds of certain individuals in Bemidji that just because they are not allowed to run things to SUIT THEMSELVES, that it is up to them to utter snorts about every- body in general except themselves and those with whom they “train.” The poor boobs seem to be laboring under the belief that they have re- . ceived some divine dispensation which allows them to do as they doggone (that’s easy) please with everybody and everything in Bemidji, and for any one to even dare to possess a contrary opinion and utter it is looked upon as little short of high treason. They seem to harbor the belief that they are the royal conservators of the city of Bemidji and all that therein is. Where théy get such an insane delusion no one seems to know. They also seem to be possessed of the idea that NO ONE ELSE HAS ANY RIGHTS NOR PRIVILEGES. They figure they're the BIG frogs in the puddle, but to the general citizenship of Bemidji they look like plugged half dollars, and worth about as much when it comes down to a question of extending any AID for the ADVANCE- MENT of Bemidji and the INTERESTS OF ITS PEOPLE. MAKES NO DIFFERENCE TO US Some of our ‘“friends’” were overheard a few days ago taking good verbal walfops at us. It didn’t surprise us any in the least, however, and we don’t care one continental darn WHAT some of ’em think or say about us. Some of ’em are just about the calibre that they could walk ten abreast through the aperture which it is declared a camel cannot pass. ‘We don’t care whether they like our editorials or not, nor whether they like us personally or not and if they derive any pleasure from discussing or cussing us, fire away. Only—*keep off the grass.” Congress wanted an extra session, and now they are to have it. The president has summoned them to meet on April 2. We who remain at home and do the voting are hoping that they will reverse the prevnlliflg order of things and do something instead of nothing. We are even ex- pecting them to climb to the sublime heights of proving themselves states- men instead of mere politicians. We are even wagering that at least a majority of them will evince at least a reasonable degree of loyalty to their own country. And for all of which, WHEN WE SEE IT, we will give thanks and send them back again. - S, There’s some persons who are snorting around at the new city administration in general because some things don’t seem to just suit THEM. No one heard 'em snorting before and mebbe that’s why the PEOPLE did a little snorting when the proper time came. The secretary of agriculture says there is no food shortage. The sec- retary is a gentleman, but if he will examine the editorial larder he will learn that he is the gol darnedest liar this side of purgatory. We couldn’t tell a bigger one ourself. This censoring the American press may be advantageous, but it has its drawbacks as well. Under its operation even the wildest of the yellow -journals can not scare up more than a dozen war thrills a day. About the only thing that will protect the potato planter from indict- ment this vear for destroying currency, is the fact that spuds do not as yet bear the government stamp.
