She had a long nose and a short upper lip; a beard, a mole, a mus- tache and a jaw, dear reader, that would make a chunk of chilled steel green with envy. About the same time another friend trooped in with a small, compact, two-gill creature who fiddled. Fiddling and dawdling over everything she did was her specialty. Nero fiddled while Rome was burning. She fiddled while the potatoes were doing the same. Now if you want our opinion on this momentous question we would advise striking middle ground. For instance, one neither tall nor sh9rt. dwadling nor adamant, iron nor mush. Make a selection in cold blood after due consideration. By so doing one will usually get one that fits and the chances of a visit to Reno will thereby be greatly reduced. In short, a three-quarter length is usually considered quite satisfactory. NEWSPAPERS DESERVE CREDIT The publisher of today is not stingy or shortsighted because he must necessarily be economical. He buys without hesitation that whichy he believes will improve his paper and increase his income, and therein he evidences increasing wisdom and expansion. These are good things all around. ‘frue, they have been brought about through dire necessity, and we feel like slamming the insatiable price boosters in jail, where they belong. But then, some of our greatest bless- ings of life are the direct outgrowth of necessity. And if there is one busi- ness in this country that deserves to be recoghized and credited with its true value to the community, it is that of the country newspaper. HERE'S “PROOF OF THE PUDDING” One of the best indications of what Beltrami county possesses as a place to live, to progress, was that of Wednesday when the state land de- partment sold approximately 1,300 acres of land in Beltrami county at auction, eighteen men being the list of buyers. O this list only one was from outside the county and eight of the others were from Tenstrike. All PReltrami county buyers are land owners and the fact that they stood ready to buy more land when opportunity afforded proves that they are con- vinced Beltrami county land is a good investment. If there’s any necessary substantiation of prosperity claims here- abouts it can be pointed out that men are walking around with large and juicy rolls of the coin of the realm in their attire, although in certain instances they don’t long possess it. Still, it gets into circulation, even if the circulator does land in the pen occasionally. We sincerely hope the Odd Fellows will decide tonight to erect their proposed new temple. It would be a handsome ornament to the com- munity, a credit to the member sof the order and greatly enhance a prom- inent corner of the business district. And it should pay well. Even Uncle Sam raises his employes occasionally. Miss Eliza R. Hyde, a clerk in the federal treasury department at Washington, got a raise of $200 a year the other day. She had only been on the job 52 years, too. We notice in dispatches where plowing is in order in some parts of the country. Well, they haven’t anything on Bemidji at that. Doing a little plowing here also, only it is mostly on the walks. And now it is stated planting is late in the south, labor scarce, wages away up, etc., etc., etc. Sure—up goes the price of eatables some more. There are some people who, if you extend them a welcome and a chair, will wear them both out. A henpecked man has no vote in the State of Matrimony. The top may look al right, all the stubble and weeds turned under by the plow. Anyone would say the field was well plowed. True enough, but clean plowing isn’t all there is to making the right kind of a seed bed. In plowing up a field of stubble to get the best results and make an extra good seed bed, first disc your land and then the ground that is turned under has been worked up and is ready to give you the results for your labor.
