Pub- Wmfiuflynflmfipofippfidhmydmlw,iad- PAPER OF THE CITY OF BEMIDJI, MINNESOTA m The Daily Ploneer is a member of the United Press Association, and 5 represented for foreign advertising by the— THE “CITY BEAUTIFUL” CLUB Bvery town, no matter how small or how large, should have a “City Beautiful” club. This is an organization that is almost indispensible if a town is to be made attractive and kept so. It makes no difference how neat and orderly the citizens may be about their premises or the mer- chants about their business houses, there are bound to be a thousand and one things that need the attention of a special organization created for the purpose. There never was a truer axiom coined than ‘“What’s everybody’s busi- ness is nobody’s business.” This applies most forcibly to many things that tend largely to make or mar the looks of a town. Now that warm weather i8 coming on, the labors of the city beauti- flers will be In greit demand. Just now, after the ravages of winter’s gtorms, nature presents her most depressing aspect, and much attention will be required if she is to re-clothe the face of the earth in her original garments of beauty. Unsightly washes and gullies, filled up ditches and drains, accumulations of weeds and trash and leaves and twigs are to be removed, and nature given her fair chance to do her best. 1t is in- this capacity that the order loving women of the town show to advantage. Women always have a keener eye for beauty and harmony than men. They are more given to mneatness and ordiliness than men. Start out a committee of energetic women to supervising the cleaning up of a town and they will find nuisances and unsightly places of which the men had never thought. Just here we would like to offer a suggestion in connection with beau- titying the town. The problem of the vacant lot has always been the hardest ome for the town beautifiers to solve. The average owner pays little attention to it, hence it invariably presents a neglected and desolate apparance. Now this season is going to see a demand for every dollar’s worth of food rroducts that this country can produce, and these vacant lots should, wherever possible, be turned to account to swell the output. Any kind of growing crop—corn, potatoes, vegetables—are far preferable to a coat of weeds. When this is done, turn attention to the neglected back yards. You'll find many of them that now are refuse dumps, but that can be made places of beauty and usefulness. : Most towns are like some people. They will keep the main streets and buildings presentable, but the more obscure places and the back streets and alleys are neglected and permitted to fall into decay. Taken to task in the matter, the authorities often reply that strangers and visitors never gee these places anyway, so it doesn’t matter. No, but WE see them, which js worse. Strangers might see them and go away and forget them, but we must live with them, which is liable to breed neglect and disorder in our- selves. The man with a sore toe may know that it is hidden from the public, but HE never forgets that it is there. Always bear this in inind: The town will be beautiful or the reverse, just in proportion as its people are Jovers of beauty and order, or the re- verse. A beautiful and well kept home, with a foul alley in the rear and a neglected street, is a standing reproach to its owner. He should have sufficient pride to see that his surroundings harmonize with his pos- eessions. It's time to get busy in Bemidji. No, Gladys, the Dodo is not the only bird that is extinct. There is also the old fashioned housewife who used to do the family washing on Monday, patch and darn on Tuesday, iron on Wednesday, clean house on Thursday, bake on'Friday, catch up with odds and ends of work on Sat- urday, and convoy the old man and chidlren to church on Sunday. Some of us have memories of her, but even memory is becoming dim. Who can blame the Germans for retaliating on the British for plant- ing mines in the North Sea? We can all remember when “our crowd” thrashed the “Coon Hollow” gang for filling our swimming hole with snags. Nature is the same in all ages and in all lands. How we long for a sight of a freckle-faced, barefooted boy with a sione bruise and a genuine case of old bashioned bellyache. It would as- sure us that nature after all has not ceased to be kind to her children. And while some are discussing ‘‘universal service” let’s discuss a good boat service—on Lake Bemidji this summer. The only neutrality that appeals to us is to kick the fellow who kicks us, regardless of neutrality. That’s neutrality. Spade up the back vard, but save the worms. They may be in de- mand before the summer is over. Strange, indeed, that no one has thought to harmess the shark and employ it in submarine warfare. ‘What is a price booster? God knows, but He is ashamed to tell. It is a GOOD FLAG. Up with it! Keep it there! One of the most beautiful of the early lighthouses and the first tower in a sea swept position was Cordouan light on the coast of France at the en- trance to the river Gironde. It was built in 1611, and, although it has been remodeled, some of the original struc- ture is still there, more than 200 feet high. Mauna Loa, in the Hawaiian Islands, 13,950 feet high, is the highest moun- tain which rises directly from the sea. CERTAIN-TEED stands out conspicuously for quality, satisfaction, and economy.
