If a teaspoonful of lemon juice:is added to bolling rice it will not only whiten the grains, but will give them a more pleasant flavor. If the color has been tuken out of silk by fruit stains a little ammonia will usually restore it. To keep nickel and silver ornaments bright rub them with & woolen cloth saturated with spirits of ammonia. After having the hands in soapsuds wash them in vinegar to make them goft and white and prevent their chap- ping. A few drops of ammonia in a cupfal of warm water, applied carefully, will remove spots from paintings and chro- mos. Dimock, pres- ident of the George Washington Me- morial association. The motive of the organization 18 to realize one of the most conspicuous be- quests in George Washington’s will He left $25,000 to further the “diffusion of knowledge.” This $25,000 was in- vested in a navigation company, but ‘was lost in a reorganization of the com- pany. In carrying out the wishes of Wash- ington the association has planned a building which: will be located on a large site already donated to the or- zanization by an act of congress. One of the chief features of the building will be Signers’ hall, dedicated to the signers of the Declaration of Inde- pendence. This vast assemblage room will accommodate from 10,000 to 12,000 persons. Other rooms will be devoted to the meetings and national headquarters of scientific, educational and other organi- sations. The building will occupy the site of the old railroad station in which Garfield was shot and will overlook the vista of the Mall, Washington's chief place of beauty. Besides Mrs. Dimock, other promi- nent people who are interested in the project are former President Taft, Sen- ator Elihu Root; Dr. Ira Remsen, pres- ident of Johns Hopkins university; Thomas Nelson Page, ambassador to Italy, and Charles D. Walcott, secre- tary of the Smithsonian institution. . * x % KOORS BROTHERS €0. <« *x * « Bakers and Confectioners & % Manufscturers and Jobbers & &+ Ice Cream, Bakery Godds, & & Confectionery,Gigarsand = & * Fountain Goods *x Phone 135 & DRY CLEANING Clothes Cleamers for Men ‘Women and Children THE MODEL DRY CLEANING HOUSE Hogan Bros., Props. JUANITA ‘In the soft twfllght or as the deeper shadows gather, the song of ‘‘Junita’’ always seems to soothe. The gifted authoress of this popular song was Mrs. Norton, a granddaughter of the famous Richard Brinsley Sheridan, born in England in 1808. Her songs of “Bingen on the Rhine’” and “‘Juanita” -were very popular. She died in 1877 and lived to hear the echoes of her plaintive ‘‘Juanita” come to her from nearly every civilized country in the world.
