THE WEEKLY PIONEER Eightmwnhmmgnnmm;ryo{fl\enewlo!thaweek. Pub- Wemnmndnymdmtpomgewdtomynddm!u,md- — e e OFFICIAL PAPER OF THE CITY OF BEMIDJI, MINNESOTA The Daily Pioneer is a memher of the United Press Association, and 18 repredented for tore!n ldvenmnc by the— @emeral offices in New York and Chicago, branclies in all principal Citles. 4 INALIENABLE RIGHT OF EVERY VOTER There is a'little more of the “old stuff” being brought into the pres- ent municipal campaign and that it should merit any attention at all is surprising, but lest some “‘fall” for such tactics of the old time under- ground machinations it might not be inopportune at this time to shed a 1ittle light upon what is being pursued in certain quarters. It 18 nothing more than a desperate effort on the part of certain per- sons, yes INTERESTS, if you will, to “put it over” with the sole purpose of perpetuating the “bunch in the know,”. in other words and in plain United States NOT ON THE LEVEL. ‘It COULDN’'T BE for the game that is being played. The scheme is this: Certain ‘“‘political” interests are going to per- sons not residents of certain wards in the city and inducing them to go to residents and voters of other precincts and use personal friendship or ob- ligation on the part of the one approached to induce him to vote for cer- tain candidates. It is'the desperate effort on the part of certain interests to retain their fast failing hold upon all that is near and dear to the decent citizen- ship of Bemidji, the man who is endeavoring to ‘“‘get somewhere” and not be crushed in the attempt. The candidates who are resorting to such con- temptible practice are doing no more than what is within them and is only a specimen of their calibre as citizens. ° We would hate to think that such practices, attempts to beat into submission and make subservient any voter who has the least spark of manhood in his makeup would accomplish this aim. To approach a man in that fashion is nothing more than an attempt at intimidation and a cheap form of bribery. And the man who can be ‘“bought” in any such manner holds his man- hood pretty cheap. The residents of the respective wards will say who they want to rep- resent them and need no assistance from any persons who are ljesidents of other wards. The voters of each precinct know what is needed and have sufficient intelligence to take care of their own interests and they should see to it that their will not thwarted by any base influence from other parts of the city, and be dominated by other interests not their own and at wide variance with-their wishes. . The voters of every precinct—the voters who have the interests of their home community at heart—should arouse themselves to the situa- tion as exists and rebuke unmistakably any such attempts to dominate them, their wishes and their interests. It is the INALIENABLE RIGHT of EVERY MAN to cast a ballot FREE and UNHAMPERED by ANY MAN or POWER in existence and EVERY INTELLIGENT citizen will do so. = WHY ARE THEY CANDIDATES? There are some candidates for office who haven’t a leg to stand on as to why they are candidates. They have not taken-the slightest interest in the advancement of their home city, together with the business in- terests of the city; they have not given a penny to enterprises nor affairs that had to do with bringing Bemidji to the position it now occupies nor helped in any manner the work being done for its future. They don’t care one continental darn whether the city progresses or not in any manner except as pictured in their own little narrow, con- tracted shriveled brain. They are not, even now, helping in the great work being undertaken for Bemidji's future, yet they presume to repre- sent the people of Bemidji, the taxpayers of the community, the working man, the wage earner and everybody else who is striving for a Bigger, Better and Busier Bemidji? Why their candidacy? ‘We’ve paid the advance in the cost of eats, and clothing, and shoes, and print paper, and have managed to live through it, but this boost in the price of cigarettes and puff bags is too intolerable to bear. We demand an investigation. Life may not be all roses on the farm, but there’s a heap of sa.isfac- tion in knowing that every time a hen cackles you can hear the money jingling in your pockets. Nero fiddled while Rome burned and there are some candidates for public office who would shame even the Roman emperor in his palmiest days. The votaries of Baachus would still pay homagé to their god, but they are not going to do so in Bemidji. Not on your tintype. We hear rumblings of a coming food shortage in this country. But that's stale news to the editorial stomach. Prejudice, blind prejudice, is the reason for some candidates. Talk about sacrifices for a Roman holiday. WHY are some candidates? We rise to inquire.
