According to Sam Sherman of the Williams Northern Light, the county commissioners will commit an unpardonable sin if they grant the request for an appropriation for the new county fair association, which was recently formed at Baudette. At present the entire appropriation goes to Bemidji, and according to Sam’s line of reasoniiig it would be a crime to allow the north end to get its just share—simply because the fair will be held at Baudette. Then he proceeds with the statement that Wil- 1lams will soon be the capital of the world and that Baudette will shortly hit the toboggan. In short, Sam appears to have a fit every time Baudette i 1s mentioned. He can’t see us at all, and yet two years from now he will expect this metropolis to support a Williams man for the legislature. Mebbe we will, Sam, but if we do you'll have to lay away that hammer avail had the disease been allowed - PIONEER OFFIGE to continue. We havn’t yet had the pleasure of meeting Sam, but if he claims that his home town will soon become the capital of the world, as it is as- serted he is doing, we have a sneaking idea that the people of his com- munity know he is “among those present.” N THE END OF THE FIZZLE Another long drawn out effort to come to terms with Carranza has resulted in the usual fizzle. The Mexico-American joint commission has failed of its object, because Carranza has refused to ratify the work of the commission. i It is the end of the fizzle—that is, of the present fizzle. It is said that General Pershing and his men are to be withdrawn from Mexico. It is just as well. If they are not to be allowed to “take Villa” or protect their countrymen, then they should not be made ridic- ulous by compelling them to loaf around and suck their thumbs. Taft fizzled when he sent the army roaring down to the border and then halted them there. Wilson fizzled when he rushed them into Vera Cruz and then rushed them out again. And the army is fizzling because it is not allowed to do anything but fizzle. With two administrations fizzling, with two congresses fizzling, and with the army fizzling, the American people seem to be in somewhat of a fizzle all around. % And, from all indications, we will keep right on fizzling. Many newspapers are running beauty talks by noted women. But since the ladies of this community are not in need of the artificial article we have no space to waste on a dead subject. Yes, it was the immortal Lincoln who said: “You can fool some of the people all the time and all the people some of the time, but you can't foll all of the people all the time.” The work of some ‘‘politicians’ reminds us somewhat of a piece of sandpaper. But there are some sandpaper coarser than others. It was Daudet, the noted French author, who wrote: “The woman who continually blushes must be terribly well informed.” The fellow who boasts of getting something for nothing usually finds that it is worth while just what he gave for it. Promises, explanations and excuses have a certain value, but it is very uncertain at best. These are the days when every self-respecting egg imsists on an in- dividual price ticket.
