THE ROADS OF 1017. It will be but a short time now until the rigors and storms of winter will bepast and the problems of a new year will ‘be before us for solution. One of the most important of these problems will be, “What of our country roads in 19177 + Tbe year 1916, witneased the greatest impetus to road building that has over been known in our history. Government, state, ¢ ounty and munieipality all awoke and attacked the problem with vigor, and the re- sults in many instances were most gratifying. . But there was, the past year, another element in the solution of the good road problem that herstofore had been lacking—that of community 6o-operation. In many parts of the country the importunities of the good roads advocates had their effect, and the PEOPLE.awoke to the. live fact that the roads were THEIR roads, and that THEY were individually re- sponsible for their maintenance. And this was just the added force needed to give the movement an impetus that nothing could stop. It is this feature of community co-operation that must be fostered 1 our roads are to be made what we would have them. Each and every citizen must be fully aroused to HIS responsibility—not merely to pay his taxes and give his few days of work each year, but to shoulder his full share of responsibility and never let up until every road in his community 18 a GOOD road. Many communities have worked up a sentiment that each and every citizen shall give one day out of each month to voluntary labor on the roads. This is an auxiliary to all other road working facilities. And the plan as carried out in these communities has worked splendid results in the improvement of the highways. B If all communities will organize on this plan, work it up to a maximum of efficiency, and keep the enthusiasm at white heat, it will be only a short while until they awake to thelrnct that their road problem has been solved. BRIEF ESSAY ON THE NOSE The nose is an unnecessary nuisance; one of nature’s insults. And wasn’t the middle of the face an awful place to put it! cut in front where it can catch cold. But what’s to be done about it? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. If we could wear overcoats on them without being taken for half- backs; or if they were detachable, so we could put them in our pockets and hook on white rubber ones when we go out into the cold. That would be different. But we can’t. Our noses are stuck fast. They're forever getting broken, or smudged, or warty. But they’re inevitable. If they were even equipped with automatic shutouts, like automobiles. Or, better steill, if we'd been born without noses in the first place. Solid, decorative knobs would have done as well. Think what a blessing that would have been to some neighborhoods. Right That article in the Weekly Sentinel about the Daily Pioneer and its . report of a city council meeting, reproduced in the Pioneer yesterday, cer- tainly seemed to please the alderman who was reading it before it went into the Sentinel Thursday evening. At least he looked pleased when we happened to be passing, about 6 o’clock, with two well known citizens. And we were glad that he was glad. We know a woman living in the north part of Bemidji who was very retiring and seldom went out. She bought one of those new short skirts and now people see more of her. It is claimed that the head of a full grown elephant contains nearly 1,000 pounds of ivory. But then there are some ‘‘politicians’” who are not so large as an elephant. We notice that a new jar has been opened and a trowel is being used to spread it on with. But the trouble is, it doesn’t seem to stick. The fellow who does, it today instead of tomorrow seldom has to ponder over the mistakes of yesterday. The allies say they won't, and the Teutons say they won’t, and darned if it doesn’t look as if they won’t. If the price of paper continues upward we will soon be tempted to circulate $50.00 bills instead. Now that everybody is talking of national defense, let’s have some- thing besides talk. Well! If the ‘“official explainer” hasn’'t been brought out and greased. Well! “MUCH ADO ABOUT -NOTHING” is correct. But we wouldn’t have missed it. And we’ve no ‘“sore” spots. That’s honest. Cheer up!
