NIRESs ASEDL AT .GENERAL OFFICES @ NEW YORK AND CHICAGO FhanChES (N ALk ThF PRINCIPAL CITIES LIGHT THE WAY. Do you believe in Christmas? Does it mean something to you be- gides the day of gift-giving and feast- ing? To all Christendom it is the recog- nition and acknowledgement of the coming to earth of the Light that has marked the pathway of humanity to the greatest happinesses that have befallen mankind. While all the world is today shrouded in the gloom cast by the dreadful strife of the countries of the Old World, and while the very birthplace of the Prince of Peace and the Light of Lights, is disturbed by the sounds of war and scenes of slaughter, it would not be amiss for the people of the peaceful New ‘World to pay tribute to the recur- rence of the day that celebrates the coming of the Babe of Bethlehem. It is a custom long observed in certain communities, and one which has been followed by certain peoples, notably the Masonic fraternity, to place in a window of their homes on Christmas Eve a lighted candle, as a gymbol of their faith and to “light the way to Him who is to come.” The most common Christmas cus- toms are more or less based on sym- bolisms, and what could be a more simple and ‘beautiful symbol than this? It will be a little thing to do in itself, and yet there will radiate from each of these tiny lights the thought and the faith of the human soul that peace and good will yet will reign and rule the world when man has lost his selfish desire to rule by might. The Pioneer would urge, therefore, that every home in Bemidji show forth this faith. Let us each place in the most prominent front window of our homes a burning taper, as though to welcome the coming of the child whose birth 1916 years ago was signalized by the blazing star that led the wise men of the east to his humble manger-cradle. It will do us good to so acknowledge our faith and it will be a means of warming the heart of the passerby as he re- alizes its import. NOW WE KNOW. ‘While looking through a large newspaper we happened to notice this, sent out from Chicago: Chicago, Dec. 21.—Women’s afternoon and evening gowns in the coming season will be filmy and much trimmed in lace and embroidery, according to an an- nouncement by members of the Fashion Art League of America Lin- predominate by the board of directors. gerie gowns will for dress wear. Members of the league are urged to remember that the time has come when the good dress- maker must know anatomy just as the sculptor does, Allie E. Bailey, president of the league, asserted. We never had any doubts about dressmakers NOT knowing ‘‘anat- omy.” We've seen several of those waists cut V in the back and C in front and when worn with one of those lidless corsets gave everybody ample opportunity for the study of anatomy. The Herald argues in a recent issue that the Britons who stay out of places which Germans frequent, be- cause they do not wish to associate with the latter, are not only not worrying their rivals but are doing gxactly what the Germans want them to do. The German, it points out, “is to be found in the clubs, the restaur- ants and in the private houses, and if Britishers give those places the go-by owing to the presence of a German element, so much the better for the German plan of active pre- paration for the close of the war.” The Queen Esther society extends you and yours a cordial invitation to attend the community Christmas tree exercises this evening at the Masonic temple corner.
