Destruction precedes progress. Nothing can proceed without destruc- tion. And in this undeniable fact the fire of yesterday which destroyed the Dalton block may be a forerunner of a bigger, more substantial and more beautiful structure than that ‘which was wiped out. The old building was a relic of an early day. It was not unattractive in many ways and occupied ome of tht most desirable corners of the busi- ness district. It had served its pur- poge, however, and like all things earthly passed on. The Pioneer regrets the loss of Mr. Dalton, regrets that any one lose, but the Pioneer hopes that from the ashes of today will rise a modern business structure, one of which Be- midji may well be proud, and the Pioneer believes that if such. comes to pass the best of tenants will be secured andat good rentals. DESERVE CREDIT. And while we're about it, we want to call attention to the noble work performed by the volunteer fire de- partment at the big fire of yesterday. Chief Doran and his men certainly de- serve the highest praise. Battling in the open, with the ther- mometer hugging the bottom of the tube, the volunteers got on the job in a hurry after the alarm sounded and stuck to their work like Troj- ans. They confined the fire to the building in which it originated and saved the handsome brick block ad- joining and saw:to it that no other structure suffered.. it was a hard job and a cold job, and one not envied, but it demonstrated beyond any doubt that the fire department of Bemidji is manned by firemen who do things, no matter what obstacles may arise nor conditions. They certainly deserve all that’s coming to them and then some. - LET CANDLE GLEAM. We hope that Bemidji will this year revive the custom of placing lighted candles in the windows of homes Christmas eve, this custom be- ing in vogue in foreign countries where the spirit of Christmas means much. The placing of lighted tapers in windows is done to light the Christ child on his way and is in- deed a beautiful custom and one that will cause many to pause as to its significance. But what we were going to say ' was, have you finished your Christ- mas shopping yet? If not, get busy. Don’t wait until the last minute and don’t act like a mule when a tired out clerk is doing her best to please you when you acon’t know just what you want. While we were in the crowd watching the fire yesterday we hap- pened to notice a fair young damsel wearing a closely buttoned sweater and we are frank to admit that it was the best upholstered sweater we ever saw. We're not trying' to boss the new Carnival association, but we believe it could also take under its wing summer sports and mayhap an at- tractive club house on the’lake for the summer season might be forecast. ‘We overheard a man say yesterday. that the coming spring election would be a “warm” one. And ‘we have a sneaking mea he 18 correct 1n ms prognostication.
