The Pioneer regrets the incident that occurred yesterday when the first bulletins were posted on the presidential election. The first pre- cinets, according to United Press dis- patches, gave Hughes a slight lead. Certain prominent men became “peeved” at the report of a small Hughes victory and claimed that the Ploneer was posting the reports to prejudice the voters and that the re- ports were untrue. The complain- ants, it i{s said, sought legal relief. They claimed that it was illegal to publish a bulletin until the polls in Minnesota were closed, which would mean that no bulletins could be post- ed until after nine o’clock, despite the fact that a large percentage of the eastern count is obtainable be- fore seven o’clock. The Pioneer in no way attempted to prejudice the voters. The reports were as reliable as could be received and were received over the Western Union telegraph from the United Press association, which is consid- ered one of the most reliable press associations for afternoon newspa- pers. The Pioneer bulletined the re- port only with a view of giving the people of Bemidji the best and quick- est election service possible. The Pioneer went to considerable expense to install a press association wire to secure the returns the quickest way possible. Whether or not bulletins of votes in other states can be posted in this state before the polls close comes un- der the Corrupt Practice Act. It is the concensus of opinion among newspaper men that newspaperst may use election returns in Minnesota for publication, bulletin purposes or any other regular newspaper functions. As said above, the Pioneer regrets the incident inasmuch as the Pioneer was making every etrort possible to give its readers and the people of Be- midji the best election service pos- sible. Ports here and Su- perior furnish nearly all the North- west's coal, which is shipped by rail from here. This admission of their inability to get sufficient coal here while navigation was open during the closing season, isi fair evidence that there will be a coal shortage this winter when thermometers register around 50 below zero.
