Sy i TR e Y N ' THE BENIDJI DAILY PIONEER SATURDAY, NOVEMBER & uut Tariff for Protection, No- for Revenue Only To recount the advantages of the Protective Tarifi—as brought into being, and fostered by the Republican Party—would require pages and pages of space. It changed us from a nation of dreamers into a nation of DOERS, from someume producers of raw mate- nals into INDUSTRIAL LEADERS OF THE WORLD. Before the coming of the Republican Party, our most valuable assets lay dormant—in many cases unknown Others were sent abroad, to be returned. done into finished products by the poorly paid labor of other lands— America Paid the Freight Under Republican Tariff, the nation became INDUSTRIALLY INDEPENDENT Its thousands of facto- nes and mulls gave work to hundreds of thousands, and profits—both for labor and capjtal—remained here. Amer- ica was no longer simply paying the freight. But the pendulum is swinging back and the seeming prosperity of today, while actual, for the moment, 18 DELUSIVE. The party of low tariff or no tariff—at the best, tariff, not for protection of home industries, but for revenue only—is in power and already its malevolent work is evident. European labor will compete without any tariff wall with the better-paid labor of America, and there can be but one result—American labor will be reduced to the low level of foreign labor, losing its opportunity for the enjoyment of necessaries in abundance, some of the comforts and luxuries of life, time for self-culture, ownership of the family cottage and a responsible, contented, happy American home, or the tariff wall will be rebuilt, to hold back the ruinous competition of cheap foreign labor. WHY SUFFER CALAMITY BEFORE BUILDING THE WALL? Is the Democratic low-tariff or no-tariff evil to be allowed frec sway? There is but one way to check its sure coming. . Already the surging sea is finding its way through our broken dyke. When the full tide comes the dyke will be a memory. Rebuild the Dyke SEND TO CONGRESS REPRESENTATIVES who will again make secure that measuzc ci pie.....on to American labor and American capital that the Republican party has always given; the protection that made and held American industries foremost in the world.
