One of the evils of a non-partisan ticket is that it causes less interest in a campaign. And woe betide us if, when it withers, we have not above us a protective tariff roof to save us from the with- ering sun of foreign competition. Judge James H. Quinn of Fair- mont, who has presided on the bench for 17 years, holding court in 30 counties, is making a big campaign for the vacancy on the supreme court bench of the state. Indications are that he will be elected by a large vote. He is recognized as one of the ablest jurists in the state. Democrats complain of the criti- cisms that have been directed at the president. The fact remains that the president refused to act in dealing with Mexico, Germany or Great Brit- ain until forced into it by the volley of the nation’s criticisms. The minor achievements for which Democrats applaud the president were wrung from him by an indignant people. There are several good and suffi- cient reasons why President Wilson has “kept us out of the European war.” They are as follows: 1—No European country wanted to fight us. 2—All the belligerents wanted us to keep strictly out. 3—The American people were bitterly opposed to but- ting in. 4—Congress wouldn’t stand for a war. 5—It would have required two years for the United States to get on a war footing. Governor Burnquist has opened his campaign for re-election. In his key- note address at Brainerd Saturday night, he outlined his platform as follows: The budget system and economy in state departments. Re organization of departments and boards to secure simplicity and econ- omy. Assembling of several tolated ac- tivities in a public domain depart- ment. ) A drainage survey of the state, with central control of future work. Extension of good roads. Legislation to improve conditions of labor. Better support for public health work and care of tuberculosis. Better child welfare legislation. Election of Charles E. Hughes as president.
