A large number of Bemidji people fafled to take advantage of an oppor- tunity last evening—an opportunity to listen to an excellent concert. Only a few attended the free concert given at the city hall last evening by the Bemidji band. If an out-of-town band with not half as much talent had come to the city hall and charged admission it would have had a larger crowd than was present at the free concert given by the band last eve- ning. Wake up, Mr. and Mrs. Be- midji, and give the band the sup- port that it deserves by showing your appreciation of its efforts. You will be the gainer in more ways than one. TUBERCULOSIS WEEK. December 3 to December 10, in- clusive, has been set aside as Tuber- culosis Week in the United States, according to an announcement today by the National Association for the Study and Prevention of Tubercul- 0818. During this week an :ffort will be made ito enlist the co-operation of every church, school, anti-tubercul- osis and public health organization, lodge and working men’s organiza- tion in the United States in an active effort to bring tuberculosis to the attention of the people. Last year over 150,000 organiza- tions and institutions took part in the Tuberculosis Week celebration. It is expected that this year this num- ber will be greatly increased. NEBRASKA ALL RIGHT. The Republican campaign man- agers are mystified by reports which apparently have no parentage to the effect that Republican prospects in Nebraska are not bright. Their pri- vate reports from that state indicate most satisfactory conditions with brilliant prospects not only of carry- ing the electoral vote for Hughes but of defeating Hitchcock, who is run- ning for re-election as senator. Sen- ator Hitchcock has lined up with the ‘“wets” in that state, while Republi- can prognostigators insist that the state will go dry. William J. Bryan, now that he has come out for Wil- son, is put in the embarrassing posi- tion of having to support Hitchcock, candidate of the “wets,” despite Mr. Bryan’s well known opposition to anything wet, other than grape-juice. It is also reported that Mr. Hughes' stand on the Adamson wage-increase law has the approval of all the farm- ers of the state. WEALTH AND HAPPINESS. “One soon wearies of riding about for pleasure in private yachts and pri- vate cars,” says Charles M. Schwab. And he ought to know. He has made uncounted millions out of war orders, but they have ad- ded nothing to his comfort or enjoy- ment. Surfeited with wealth, he complains that wealth brings mno pleasure or happiness that any "’reas- onable man” can’t get for, say $10,- a year. Nevertheless we don’t see Mr. Schwab giving away the Bethlehem Steel company, rejecting further war orders and retiring to a little farm in the woods. He continues living in "his luxurious mansion in New York, directing the affairs of his cor- poration, accepting his millions in dividends and contemplating with satisfaction the progress of Bethle- hem stock toward $600 a share. He neglected to mention the one thing that wealth does bring, which is unattainable by the man of modest means. It brings power. The exercise of power is the one Juxury of which the strong man never tires. And for that, men are willing to sacrifice yachts and private cars and domestic comforts and often even friendship and love. It is the ‘“last infirmity of noble minds.” The men afflicted with it are seldom happy; but they cling to their power be- cause they would be still more un- happy without it. e R R A A R R R B R BB BB AR i SR B B - AR SR el Has Your Gome in and Subscription ;e oy o time you are Expired? in'toun ————e—,—,—,—ee e Pittsburgh .. ..
