Honesty, integrity, perseverance— these are the real assets in life. Too many of us live wholly in to- day and forget that tomorrow will ever exist. Do not tie to the man who knows it all, for in all probability he knows less than you. Have you started on that essay for the “Beltrami county saloons vs. Beltrami dairy cows” contest that is being conducted by J. J. Opsahl, the Home-Maker, through the Pioneer? The contest will close September 1. The Pioneer today publishes an ar- ticle written by a United Press staff correspondent at Buenos Aires about the prices in South America. The United Press association re- cently opened its Buenos Aires office and it is believed that the opening of the service in South America marks a new epoch in the develop- ment of social and commercial rela- tions between North and South Am- erica. In the past South American mnewspapers have received most of their foreign news from European sources. A CHALLENGE TO THE FUTURE (By Chicago Tribune) Mr. Hughes'’ criticism of the diplo- macy of the Wilson administration is a masterly indictment. We know that the main asset of the Democratic campaign is the unconsciously yet bitterly ironic formula: ‘He kept us out of the war.” To this .Mr. Hughes’ calm but stinging analysis is a staggering answer. From this re- view of four years of unhappy in- aptitude we realize that we have been kept perpetually on the rim of war, where courageous firmness would have thrust us safely back from the abyss; we realize that after four years of dizzy balancing we are still in the midst of intolerable com- plications, still threatened and still unprepared. And we find ourselves, despite the repeated and ever present warnings of events, not only unprepared with- in but with our credit among nations shamefully impaired, our chief de- fense against affront and injury— the respect of our rivals—Ilaid low. If this is keeping us out of war, we have paid a heavy price not merely in national self-respect but in actual security, and it is a time for the American people to ask themselves whether with any consideration of their own safety or of the well being of their children, such a policy, such pilotage, can be longer accepted—the policy of a fallacious peace which perpetuates danger and a rudderless pilotage. Mr. Hughes’ survey of the imme- diate post challenges our future. We have muddled along, but our grati- tude for such immunity as we have enjoyed should be directed to Provi- dence. The question now is how dare we go on into a future full of the gravest possibilities under such guidance as we have had for four years? INVENTOR OF THE MONITOR TO HAVE $100,000 MEMORIAL (By United Press) ‘Washington, Aug. 22.—Fifty years after his epochal ‘‘cheese-box on a raft” rescued the Union navy from utter destruction, John Eriesson, in- ventor of the historic Monitor of Civil war days, is to have a memorial erected to him here, it seems certain today. A bill for a $100,000 memorial has passed congress and with strong back- ing is awaiting action by the presi- dent. Swedish - American = societies are urging the bill and expect its passage at this session. It devel- oped in the house library committee’s | hearing that the United States owes Ericsson, or his heirs, an acknowl- edged debt, the interest on whieh, if compounded at four per cent, would “Mr. Larson suffered from stomach R.
