Yesterday Beltrami county held an election under the county option law. " The complete result will not be known for several days. The ‘“‘wets” and “drys” fought a good battle and we hope that no mat- ter which way the election goes everyone will be’a good loser. ‘We hope that there will be a con- tinuance of good nature between the two forces and that both will work for the enforcement of laws. ‘We hope that everyone will work for a bigger, better and more pro- gressivé Beltrami county. ‘We are friends and neighbors and We must live together, no matter whether the county is ‘“‘wet” or “dry.” Why not live as friends? B — “We threw a hat into ring at the county option election and some one grabbed it. It looks as if President Wilson has solved the railway strike without an exchange of notes. The United ‘States Geological Sur- vey reports that the sulphuric acid industry ‘'was very ' prosperous in 1915. " "There 'is nothing surprising in this in view of the fact that our exports 'of that product increased 500 per cent in 1915 over 1914. Sul- phuric acid is largely used in mod- ern warfare. Bemidji votes “dry.” This was because of the great improvement in city affairs since the clamping on of &= the Indian “lid.”” No longer can | “‘wet” advocates say that the majority of the citizens of Bemidji do not want a “‘dry” city. The people of ~ Bemidji have come to-know that a ‘“dry” city is the best ecity. The nearer we draw to election ~day the larger the navy recommended | by ‘the Democratic party. By No- vember first, they will be declaring ‘for 25 super-dreadnaughts and enough battleships cruisers to sus- ‘tain a pontoon bridge to Europe. Like Bob ‘Acres, they feel their cour- age-oozing out at' their finger tips, ~~and‘they find a stimulant in- empty -promises. ‘SIGNING PETITIONS. .One of the most prominent men at < Anniston, Ala., to demonstrate the truth of his contention, that the av- erage man is so compliant that he -will sign almost any petition put be: fore him, in the evidence of ‘good faith circulated among 30 business men of his ecity a petition that the city council appoint a committee to hang every minister of the gospel in : {tthetown and twenty signatures werefi promptly attached. The document was < couched in-legdl language and am-[- ! “:pled-along with numerous “whereas” — f “and#‘wherefore” until the final para- igraph ‘was reached, when it shown ' that in order to make pay- ment of the tax unnecessary, the ‘.iministers -would have to be hanged. ‘““Therefore, iithe paragraph, “that the ecity courn- — i ieil is/*hereby requested to appoint a’f: Yscommittee ‘whose duty it shall be| s > promptly to hang until he is dead| each and every minister of the gos- ~pel in this city, and may the Lord" have merey :on their souls!” After the joke on the signers; manyj 9:0f swhom: arerconservative, influen- . fential sbankers, s manufacturers :and ..merchants, became. generally known, . some of them ran to cover by de- “'claring they knew all along it was “a‘joke. ““Bilt others frankly admitted ithey! did-not read the document, as ; stheycshould.chave done, before sign- odng:it.
