D. Clarkson, Hon. Paul Nesbit, Walter Parker, L. H. Rice of Park Rapids and R. B. Millard of Little Falls, members of the Jefferson party and by Premier Norris, F. E. Luke, presi- dent of the Winnipeg Automobile fclub, and A. C. Emmett, secretary of the club. . It ‘was pointed out by the high- way officers that the trip has made history in road building and that the highway would be the backbone of the highway system of the continent, ! = Canada is Ready. “We are ready to join any move- ment that is for the bettering of the country,” said Premier Norris. “I am right in line with the Jefferson highway.” He explained that Can- ada was setting a high standard for road building and that the govern- ment was arranging the cost of the construction of roads on a fifty-fifty basis. . He explained that the build- ing of a new highway was like the building of a new railroad and that it would aid to develop the country. Canada is planning to build a road from cpast to coast in the near future. Premier Norris explained that only 12 per cent of the land in western Canada was under development and yet this acreage produced a billion dollar crop last year. He explained that Canada was the “country of op- portunity.” The only reference he made to the war was that it would affect everyone on the American con- tinent as it was a war of “‘democracy against militarism.” He stated that after the war Canada would not be burdened by a large war debt. City is Beautiful. Late in the afternoon the tourists were taken to the Winnipeg Auto- mobile’ club at Fort Garry. Every- thing possible was done to entertain the visitors from the south and the visitors were very much impressed with the city of Winnipeg. All ex- penses, even hotel bills of the visit- ors, were paid by the city. The city is a “city of beautiful parks and homes.” It is not an old city, but it is a city that has had a rapid and substantial growth. From a Hudson Bay trading post (Fort 215, Winnipeg has grown to the size 200,000 people. Winnipeg boasts of being ican continent, and the financial, turing center of the middle west; owing to its geographical position, ties with branches reaching out in every direction, it affords great pos- sibilities for trade in the province and the Northwest and an induce- ment !qr the establishment of manu- facturing and other industries. In addmon to many other advantages the mnn!cipal hydro-electric power system 'offers an abundant supply of cheap electrical energy. Noted for Streets. Thecity is noted for its wide and ‘well paved thoroughfares and beau- tiful boulevarded and residential streets. It is the educational center of the province of Manitoba and the school system is considered to be as complete as can be made. Jefferson highway tourists did not notice many outward signs of the ‘country being at war. Everything looked to be peaceful and business ap- peared prosperous, many new build- ings being constructed. Everyone in Winnipeg appeared to ‘be interested in highways. The news- papers gave much space to the tour and emphasized its importance. Among those who welcomed the tourists was Miss Katherine Stinson, the “bird woman” who flew at the Beltrami county fair last year. She remembered Bemidji as the place of beautiful lakes and requested the Pio- neer representative to send regards to her many“friends in Bemidji. The success of the morth end of the highway is assured. People of ‘Winnipeg are planning a tour over the route south through Bemidiji some time this fall and Premier Nor- ris and Mayor Waugh will make the trip to New Otrleans.
