Bemidjl has been selected on the route of the Jefferson highway, the highway from New Orleans to Winni- peg. The Bemidji route was se- lected on account of its scenic advan- tages, its excellent garage and hotel accommodations and its good roads and road building material. The Jefferson highway will mean much for Bemidji and Bemidji should make the most out of it. Tomorrow when the Jefferson officials arrive in Be- midji every citizen should turn out to greet the officials. Every person owning an automobile should line up his car along Fourth street and give the officials a real ‘“Bemidji wel- come.” THE HOOSIER POET. James Whitcomb Riley, for more than a ‘quarter of a century widely | fi known as “The Hoosier Poet,” ‘died Saturday night. He was recognized by critics as perhaps the most dis- tinctly original poet the West has ever produced. Born in the Middle West, he sang the joys, sorrows, fan- cies and humors of its folk, largely in its own dialect. The United States Public Health Service asks: Do you Think dog muzzling cruel and then- marvel at the spread of rabies? Carefully select your brand of - liquor and then feed your children unpasteurized milk? Repeat the Golden Rule and then sneeze in somebody’s face? Go camping for your health and then place your toilet so that it drains into your water supply? No matter how troubled the waters may be, if you look you can always find a stone upon which to step or a harbor in which safety may be found. Life holds more joys than sorrows for those who cultivate an open mind. Speak gently of the one ~who speaks ill of you, and the world will regard you as a gentleman and him not at all. You win, “Getting there’ is'a commendable trait in any man, but the road to be traveled should be scrutinized with a careful eye. “Letting the other fellow do it” may save you a little exertion today and lose you your job tomorrow. ACRE HOMESTEAD ‘Washington, July 25.—The ~hard fight of Mrs, Oleanne Zahl Branum to support her two children and at the ‘same time clear up 320 acres of land, yesterday won for her a patent on her little homestead in Itasca county, Northern Mimmesota. The wo- man, whose husband lives in Sweden, came to this country seven years ago in order to get away from a father who, she asserted, dissipated his money and who would ot -“raise a hand in-support of his-family. ~Mrs: Branum at once took a claim in Northern Minnesota, not knowing that unless she divorced her husband she could not become a citizen of the United States, and therefore prove up on her land. The woman applied through -the land office at Cass Lake, Minn., last week for a patent to her homestead. She had cleared a goodly share of the land and had put in nearly $1,000, in improvements. Because of - the hard fight she had made to rear her little family, the Cass Lake land of- fice called the attention of Senator Knute Nelson to the woman and he at once drew up a bill and secured the unanimous vote of the senate to have a patent given to Mrs. Branum. ~Secretary of the Interior Franklin N.|K. Lane yesterday forwarded Mrs. Branum’s homestead patent to the land office at Cass Lake.
