Governor J. A. A. Burnquist has sent out an appeal asking the citizens of the state to aid the Minnesota Na- tional Guard. A proclamation issued by him is as follows: It has again become necessary for many citizens of our state to enter military service in defense of our country. Why should not those who remain at home be very willing to be of as- sistance to those who are to bear the hardships at the front and are risk- ing their lives in the performance of their duties? ‘While under the usual government appropriations it is possible for the national guard to receive, in case of sickness or injuries, proper attention, there are many things besides with which they can be supplied and which would add materially to their com- fort. In order to raise a fund to as- sist in securing for them such addi- tional care, every mayor in the state is hereby requested to appoint a com- mittee or one or more in his com- munity to solicit and collect sub- seriptions, all of which are to be for- warded to A. C. Gooding, state treas- urer, at the capitol, St. Paul, and la- ter distributed by a commission of five to be appointed by the governor. 1t is hereby also suggested, if any member of the national guard must leave those dependent upon him with-. out means of support, that his com- munity devise some way in which to care for them until adequate provi- sion is.made by the government. Our state organizations are in need of more recruits. Minnesota will now, as in the past, do her duty. Let, therefore, all of our citizens co-oper- ate for the purpose of securing addi- tional enlistments and in the caring for those of her sons whose patri- otism and layolty are shown in their readiness to enlist in the service of their state and nation. J. A. A. BURNQUIST, Governor. COMING TO THE FRONT. No matter what our beliefs may be in the matter of woman'’s suffrage candor compels the admission that the feminine cause is making strides to- ward the ultimate achievements of their goal. 3 A few years ago the mere idea of a woman voting met with ridicule up- on every hand. It was considered a dream and a joke. Today, however, every party has its strong and powerful defenders of woman’s right to the franchise, and neitlier party cares to risk going rad- Politicians irevocably opposed to suffrage Kok ok ok ok k hk ok hkk ok k ok ok khkkkhk ok kkkk ok ok kkkk kkkkx little and diplomatically -slide over the rest. Many hundreds of them dread to be placed upon record-as ir- for women. Those who believe in the cause of woman should:take heart. It is moving along, and the pace is by no means slow. President Wilson wrote the St. Louis platform of the Democratic party, and then approved it, which, cays an exchange, is'the first consist- ent action he has been known to take since his election in 1912, “War is hell,” to quote a noted general. But we would rather have lwar with honor than to bask in the sunlight of peace at the price of our national soul. Munitions of war manufacturers are clamoring for the development of a home market by declaring war with Mexico. JEFFERSON HIGHWAY TOUR BEGUN SUNDAY St. Paul, Minn., June 26.—To in- spect three proposed routes for the northern end of the Jefferson high- way, from the Twin Cities to Winni- peg, J. D. Clarkson of Carthage, Mo., general manager of the Jefferson Trail association, left St. Paul at 11 a. m. yesterday for Winnipeg in an automobile. With him rode a rep- resentative from each of the three sections of northern Minnesota seek- ing the trail. The first or western route, goes through Alexandria and Detroit, the second or central route, through the lake region and the third or eastern route through Brain- erd and Bemidji. Several automobile parties are expected to accompany Mr. Clarkson for at least a part of the journey. ‘Winnipeg, June 26.—In order to place before the Manitoba govern- ment the advantages which the Jef- ferson highway would bring to Mani- toba and Winnipeg a deputation of a hundred leading citizens will present a petition to the government to se- cure the co-operation of the authori- ties. To make the route from Win- nipeg to Emerson on the boundary a first class fully graded dirt road will mean an expenditure of $2,000 a mile. The city is prepared to shoulder a considerable share of the cost. BIG BOAT RACES TO BE HELD IN MORNING St. Paul, Minn.,, June 26.—An- nouncement is made by Admiral Ed- ward H. VanPatten® that the racing program of the Mississippi Valley Power Boat association regatta at St. Paul on the Fourth of July will be held in the morning instead of in the afternoon, as previously an- nounced. The racing will start at 9:30. This change is made to per- mit Twin City visitors who so desire, to attend the automobile races at the Speedway in the afternoon of the Fourth. The boat racing on July 5 and 6 will be held in the afternoon, beginning at 1:30. Promises made to one’s self are just as hard to keep as those made to others. NOT THE PAINLESS METHOD “In Belgium,” said Will Irwin, the correspondent, “I know an artillery blacksmith who carrier on the sleeve of ‘his uniform the hammer and pin- cers—the insignia of his calling. “ ‘Wot’s them things on your sleeve mean?’ a civilian asked him one day. “ ‘They mean I'm an army dentist,” he said, with a wink at me. “ ‘Dentist, eh?’ said the civilian,’ The pincers, then, are to pull the teeth out with. But the hammer— wot’s the hammer fur?’ “ “The hammer,’ said the black- smith, ‘is for use in bad cases to chloroform the patients.” " Bemidji Amazed’ By Sudden Action The incredible action of simple lavoptik eye wash “is startling.
