OLMSTED COUNTY Among the men who served in the council of Minnesota territory were David Olmsted of Long Prairie (1849-50) and 8. Baldwin Olmsted of Belle Prairie (1854-55). Al- though the latter was a mem- +“ber when this county was es- tablished, 1855, it appears to have been named in honor of the former. Born in Ver- +‘mont in 1822, David Olmsted came to the lead mining region of Wisconsin, in 1838, later traded with the Indians in Iowa, and helped to frame the constitution of that state in 1846. When the Winne- bagos were moved to Long Prairie in 1848 he establish- ed his trading post there. Moving to St..Paul, he became the, proprietor of the Minne- apolis Democrat in 1853 and the following year was elected the first mayor of St. Paul. After living in Winona for a few years, he returned to Ver- mont where he died in 1861.
