An editor has been imprisoned for libel- ing George Washington. The facts are as follows: Paul R. Haffer, a young Tacoma (Wash.) Socialist, who in a letter to the editor of a newspaper, inti- mated that George Washington used profanity and drank liquwor, was convicted of criminally libeling the first president of the United States. Judge Card, of the Washington su- perior court, has sentenced the co- respondent to spend four months in the county jail and to pay costs of the libel suit. Haffer at his trial introduced much documentary evidence to corroborate his statements in his letter, but the jury held that his letter was un- complimentary toward the deceased president. Upon conviction attor- neys announced that the case would be appealed to the highest courts. WILL WIN. The candidates for the Republican congressional nomination in the Sixth district are coming down the home stretch with C. B. Buckman of Little Falls far in the lead. Mr. Buckman is very generally looked upon throughout the entire district as a sure winner. Sentiment in his favor is increasing steadily. ‘When in congress before, he made an excellent record as an active and efficient working member, which is a valuable asset in his present cam- paign. The Sixth district needs a live, practical man who knows the needs of this district and who can and will work early and late to serve his con- stituents. Buckman is a typical Minnesota hustler, a practical man and he does things. He is the man that the Sixth district wants to represent it in congress. GO0D SERVICE. OLD SETTLERS MEET AT STATE CAPITOL St. Paul, Minn,, June 1.—Strong men wept today, as the only four liv- ing persons who came to Minnesota before 1849, and there were 21 at that time, met at the old capitol for the fiftieth annual meeting of the old settlers' association. Doubtless it will be the last meeting for some of these four, and that fact remains very plainly on the minds of all the par- | ticipants. Those attending were A. L.
