MAHNOMEN COUNTY This county, organized in 1906, bears the Chippewa name for wild rice which played so large a part in the economy of these Indians. The same name, but spelled Ma- nomin, was applied to a very small county established in 1857 between Anoka and the town of St. Anthony. This county was abolished by con- stitutional amendment in 1869, and it is now the town of Fridley in Anoka county. If there is any one thing the world ardently desires, it is-that this rumor may be founded upon fact and not conceived in the fertile brain of some foreign correspondent. The world is satisfied with the unspeak- able horrors of this war. It wants peace, and it wants it to continue un- til unshattered until the crack of doom. What are you doing to help Be- midji? You can help by writing to your friends who live in other cities telling them of the advantages -of living in Bemidji and why they should -come to Bemidji this summer to spend their vacation. If you -do your share thousands of people will visit Bemidji this summer, and every visitor to Bemidji means another booster for Bemidji. e ‘What the country needs is an in- ventor who can invent a new auto- mobile "fuel cheaper than gasoline -~and:as good, or a carburetor that will convert kerosene or some other inex- pensive fuel into thoroughly efficient power. PAULINE BEATS WORLD’S MILK PRODUCTION RECORD Cleveland, May 22.—Jolie Topsy Pauline De Kol, a your-year-old Hol- stein cow, has just set a new world’s milk production record for one year. Topsy produced 28,416 pounds of milk the last year, or 3,304 gallons. She beat the previous world’s rec- ord by 1,671 pounds. The cow is owned by the city, and her milk, produced at the Warrens- ville correction farms, goes to work- house prisoners.
