McLEOD COUNTY Martin McLeod, for whom this county was named in 1856, was born in Montreal in 1813. When twenty-three years old he came to the Northwest, voyaging in an open boat on Lake Superior to La Pointe and then walking over 600 miles to Pembine settlement on Red River. The following spring, 1837, he made his way with great dif- ficulty to the trading house of Joseph R. Brown on Lake Tra- verse and then out on to Fort Snelling. For many years McLeod engaged in the fur trade under the direction of General Sibley, having charge of posts in various parts of Minnesota. He served in the council c! the territorial leg- islature and was one of the charter members of the Min- nesota Historical society or- ganized in 1849. Don't envy the man who is more prosperous than you are. We all to some extent must live off each other or else we would lead a hermit life. The man in business must make a profit from his customers or he must fail. The employer must get some profit from the work of his employes or he must h: out the red flag. The workingman must make a liv- ing, or beg or die. No one can get something for nothing. Labor has its price and deserves its reward. So does capital. The partnership between the two is most profitable when it is most pleas- ant. It fakes two to make a quarrel. Difficulties between the employer and employe, if both are sensible, can al- ways be adjusted. Fair-minded ar- bnrat_oés can always be found, but there must be a spirit of square dealing, fair play and good fellow- ship. Every strike increases the cost of living. Every act of violence during a strike adds to the cost of living, for it means the expenses of courts, of trials and prisons. Idleness means poverty, and poverty and’ crime means expense to the taxpayer and rentpayer. The masses of the workingmen, like the masses of employers, realize their dependence on each other. They want to do Tight and for the most part are doing right. There would be few differences between. them but for the selfish in- truder who makes a living out of the disturbances he creates, who suffers nothing by the harm he inflicts and who would go out of business if ar: bitration had full sway.—John A. Sleicher in Leslie! Theodore Roosevelt leads in the Pioneer présidential straw vote. The vote which is part df’a nation-wide vote conducted- through the Amer- ican Press association, will come. to a close May 25 and the nation-wide result will be made public about the first of June. If’you have not voted yet, send your choice immediately to the editor of thie Pioneer. Votes have been-cast for Woodrow Wilson, James BEdward Russell, Eugene Debs, A. B Cummins and Henry Ford.
