LYON COUNTY This county, established by acts of 1868 and 1869, was named in honor of General Nathaniel Lyon of Connecti- cut. General Lyon served in the Mexican war and at the beginning of the Civil war ‘was commander of the United States arsenal at St. Louis, in which position he rendered signal service to the cause. In June, 1861, he was given charge of the Department of Missouri, but was killed two months later in the battle of ‘Wilson’s Creek. ok ok ok ok ok kg ke sk sk ko ko ok ke e W b ke o ke T LTI T ™™ +* 7**~-..__ URGES CARE. _ . * Last year the total number of deaths in this state from tuberculosis was 2,231. Of these deaths, 1,307 were outside Minneapolis, St. Paul and Duluth. Only 705 of the 1,307, or 54 per cent, had been reported to the state board of health as cases be- fore the deaths. Dr. A. J. Chesley, director of the division of preventable diseases, says that health authorities have not en- forced preventive measures against the spread of the infection in unre- ported cases. It is reasonable to sus- pect, he says, that physicians who do not report cases are not over-zealous in personally insisting upon measures for the protection of the public and that individuals and families are ig- norant or indifferent on the subject. Speaking of why only 54 per cent of these cases were reported before death, Dr. Chesley said that in many cases, no doubt, it is due to the fact that the patient does not consult a physician until he is nearly dead, and has long been wasting time and squandering money on some fake cure. Formerly many doctors did not report cases because the sanatorium beds in the state were so few that the patients could not be sent to in- stitutions, and since there were no visiting nurses, it seemed that little was to be gained by reporting them. “The proportion of cases reported,” he continued, * is becoming greater each year. In 1914 less than 15 per cent of the cases outside the three | Huffma“ &J 0 eaw jarge cities were reported before death. Only when more cases are diagnosed early, reported promptly and treated in institutions or under proper home conditions will it be pos- sible to prevent the wholesale infec- tion of families and other associates,” he declared. e oz Americanization is a llve issue in many states., New York appreciatzs its significance and has already taken steps on a state basis to the Americ- ! anize the alien. The program of the New York State Department of Edu- cation covers the following proce- dure: A careful survey of the im- migrant education situation; estab- lishment of training courses to pre- pare teachers for the instruction of foreigners; adoption of standards of efficiency in public-evening school work for adult immigrants; co-op- eration with state and Federal agen- cies, and publication of state bulle- tins. The Empire State is thus set- ting an example which other of the so-called immigration states .might well follow. City authorities should take im- mediate steps to secure the Ruggles timber under the state law as is pointed out in the Pioneer today in an article relative to the timber. The bonding of the city for the purchase of the timber, we believe, will be ap- proved by every citizen. Tributes to the late Archdeacon Heman F. Parshall have been re- ceived from many people in this dis- trict. So many tributes have been received that the Pioneer will not be able to print them. ADMISSION TO THIS THEATER IS 100 DEAD FLIES Bentonville, Ark., May 19.—The boys of Bentonville “don’t need no money” to see the movies here on Friday nights. The admission fee is 100 dead flies, or ten cents in cash. A local movie magnate has posted a sign reading “Admission, 100 Dead Flies” and it is making a hit. Every Friday night one hundred of the swatted corpses admit you to his theater. And then you can win five extra tickets for bringing in the larg- est number. Bentonville citizens have taken to the novelty and indications are that flies will soon be an unknown quan- tity here. GIRLS TO SELL FLOWERS TO AID WAR VICTIMS St. Paul, Minn., May 19.—Pretty Jew girls of social rank that reaches from the residences in the West Side flat to the Iglehart street aristocracy, will sell flowers on the streets Sun- day to aid Jewish war victims.
