LE SUEUR COUNTY Like all the early explorers in America, Pierre Charles Le Sueur was looking for valuable minerals and in 1701 he found what he thought ‘was copper on the Blue Earth river and sent a cargo _to France by way of the Missis- sippi. At this time he had been exploring and trading in the country of the Sioux, for a number of years, and there is no record of any white man having preceded him up the Minnesota river. The county named in his honor was established in 1853. Bemidji extends her most cordial welcome to the bankers of the sixth district. The city’s gates swing wide. Bemidji appreeiates the opportunity to entertain them. Bemidji was once a frontier lum- ber town. Today it is the biggest little city in the Northwest. Bemidji is only about 20 years old and al- though it is now a city of over 7,000 people it never had a boom but grad- ually grew. The growth of Bemidji has been wonderful and is described by one writer as combining the char- acteristics of the oak with those of the mushroom, for with all its rapid development it has the stability, which means a definitely prosperous future. Bemidji has each season seen im- provements over the preceding sea- son. Today it has paved streets, fine buildings, beautiful parks, pub- lic library and an extensive school system. During the past year $200,- 000 in new improvements was made. Bemidji is to be the home of the state’s sixth normal school. Bemidji is a ““Paradise for those who love the out-of-doors. It requires no special spirit of op- timism to forecast a great future for Bemidji. It is the natural commer- cial center for about one-third of the state and that portion of the state is now on the eve of marvelous de- velopment. Small towns are spring- ing up throughout the area, all of ‘which look to Bemidji as a wholesale and. jobbing center, a position given it by its railroad facilities. So.Bemidji bids her honored guests of today a most cordial welcome, | hoping that they will enjoy theu-; stay in Bemidji and hoping that the impressions they carry away will be pleasant. We hope that they will come again to this city, “The City of Enterprise.” Billy Sunday has ten modern and unmistakable directions for right liv- ing. They are: Thou shalt not gos- sip; thou shalt not.covet;. thou shalt not tango; thou shalt not be stingy; thou shalt not have too many beaus; | thou- shalt: not be conceited; thou} shalt not drink; thou shalt not cuss; thou shalt not dodge thy debts; thou shalt not flirt. Cheer up! Incidentally, prepare: for a drouth. Five years in which the precipitation will be visibly less than at present, will begin after next year.: The rains which we, get in party. meet the reckoning-and it must tal the consequences. Another accident has occurred at the Mill Park railway crossing. Steps should be taken immediately by the proper. officials to see that the pres- ent crossing is made safe or that passersby are warned of the danger of the crossing.
