Reports from International Falls indicate that Koochiching county is in bad shape financially. As long as its credit continues, it may be alright, but when the paying-up times comes. the county will be up against it. The condition there is due to the piling up of bonds for roads, for ditches and for other improvements. As a result of the disclosures there during the past week trust companies are serut- inizing bonds for Northern Minnesota closer than they have in the past. We believe that other counties in Northern Minnesota should be care- ful. Beltrami county, Clearwater county and other counties should call a halt to improvements that are ab- solutely not necessary at this time. Enormous bonds are being piled up for the county for ditches. In time these counties will be getting in bad shape financially if they con- tinue bonding for ditches. It would be bad for a county to get in such shape that they could not borrow money if they wanted to, in the fu- ture. The only way to stop it is to prevent® the building of ditches where they are not needed badly. ‘We urge county officials to have more care in spénding money for im- provements. American League. The Straw Hat is a glorified bunch }" of hay. It is supposed to be worn upon the head, but it frequently graces the ear, the eyebrow or the back of the neck. Fat men do not'wear Straw Hats; they just set them on their heads when they’re not fanning. The Straw Hat is temperamental. If it does not like a man, it will fly off and the owner must put it on a leash, which he fastens to his coat with a black, oval button that looks like a liver pill. Next to a dog fight, an escaped straw hat in a wind storm is the most exciting thing in the world. The Straw-Hats eats five-dollar bills. If you -don’t believe it, get one today and see. RICHEST COUNTY. met—and zia#’s why they’ Te. pure, tempiing, tasty, whole- | some—that’s why they won't ¥ hurt any kid.” Received Highest Awards New Cook Bosk Free—Ses Slip ¥ Pound Can. % A wheat market which made it un-’ profitable for the early settlers to haul their grain by team to the Mil- waukee market, followed by a plague of ‘chinch bugs, has made Green county, Wisconsin, the richest county in the United States, according to population. The total wealth of the county, ac- cording to the latest tax figures and the statements of condition by the banks of the county is $58,219,962. 73, or a per capita of $2,425.83. Practically every dollar of this wealth has come from the cow and the dairy- ing industry. It was in the latter part of August, 1845, that a little band of Swiss emi- grants, after many weary months of travel, landed in the north part of Green county. In remembrance of the section from which they had come they called the place New Glarus. The nearest market of the colon- (| ists was Milwaukee, more than 100 miles away. With the price of wheat ranging about 15 cents a bushel it would not pay the cost of hauling to market by team. Then came a plague of chinch bugs. X Nearly hisheartened, and at their DODGE BROS. Steiner section several cows for sale to the Gass Laks, Minn, new settlers. Several head were pur- chased at $12 each and in a short time a cow was purchased for each family in the colony. From this sprung the dairying industry of Green county.
