ITASCA COUNTY When Henry R. School- craft was seeking the source of the Mississippi in 1832 he asked one of his companions, Rev. W. T. Boutwell, a clas- sical expression for the true source. Boutwell gave him the Latin words veritas (truth) and caput (head) and from these by amputating the first and last syllables, School- craft derived the word Itasca which he applied to the lake formerly known as Elk Lake, or in the French form, Las la Biche. When a bill for the organization of Minnesota Territory was first under gon- sideration in congress in 1847 an unsuccessful attempt was made to substityte in Itasca for Minnesota as the name of the proposed terri- tory. Two years later the ter- ritorial legislature gave the name to a large county es- tablished in the northern part of the state. * h k kA hk hkhk kkkk ok ok kkkhkhkkkhkhkk hkhkhkkhkkhkkhkhhkxk e K Kk Kk ok Kk ok ok kK ok Kk EER XK IR KKK KK FOOD FOR THE MIND. Never was there a time in the his- tory of this country when the people at large were as constant and invet- erate readers of newspapers as they are today, and this is especially sp in the matter of newspaper adven- tising. People who a few years ago would hardly look at an advertisement now digest every word of it, and they do it with a purpose. The human mingd is broadening and expanding and be- coming more liberal. It demands food, and particularly that class of food that conserves the financial in- terests of the reader. And the wejl worded advertisement appeals direcg- ly to every well balanced mind. ’It points the way to economy. And the wise business man adver- tises accordingly. FIRE ALARMS. Many people in Bemidji do not know how to turn in fire alarms, They are not able to tell where the fire is and therefore cause mugh trouble and delay for the firemen. In case of fire, go to the telephone and ask for the fire department. It is not neecssary to look up the number. Tell your story briefly, calmly and distinctly. Give the exact location jof. the fire, street and number, if Qs sible. Do not get excited. People hpve become over weary and have quit yelping over the high cost of living. Which, we opine, is a sure sign that the boosters are about due for another boost, ‘We sympathize with the go,)‘l housewife who had her house cleaned last week and who left the windows open last evening and collected a load of Dakota farm dust. O It’s wonderful what this shortage of dyestuffs is doing for us. Its ef- fects are so distressing it is turning some of our distinguished ecitizens prematurely gray. Political candidates generally :get what is coming to them, but gthe trouble comes in inducing .themj to see themselves-as others see them.
