GRANT COUNTY It was General Grant ra- ther than President Grant ‘who was honored in the nam- ing of this county for it was established in 1863 before he was elected to the presidency. Grant visited Minnesota in 1883 on the occasion of the completion of the Northern Pacific railroad across the continent and took part in the elaborate celebrations held in St. Paul and Minneapolis on Sept. 3 of that year. * * ok d sk ok ok ok ok ok ok ok ok ok ok ok ko ko ok ok ok & * Ak Kk kkkhkhkhkhkkkhkkkkhkhdhkdkkdk KE KKK KK KKK KK KKK R BUILDING A BRIDGE. The bridge over the Mississippi river on the highway connecting Ny- more and Bemidji is in a dangerous condition and a new bridge must he constructed. The city council ‘desires to con- struct a bridge over the inlet and in- stead of having the street constructed in its present location, wants a street to follow the lake shore to Second street and then cross the railroad tracks to Bemidji avenue. This route would do away with the daun- gerous railroad crossings at the pres- ent location. Much complaint has been heard from farmers living near Nymore that the switching of trains near the present crossing frightens their teams. The Minnesota & International railroad, however, does not want the present route of the road changed, at least it does mot want the street to cut across their tracks at Second street. The project of extending the street up the lake to Second street and then. across the tracks at Second street to Bemidji avenue would make the present railway yards valueless, say railroad officials. Action must be taken in the mat- ter immediately. Several thousand dollars from the county is available for the construction of a bridge over the Mississippi, but must be used this year. If it is not used this-year it will revert back to the county. The city council last evening ad- journed its meeting to next Monday evening when the bridge matter will be thoroughly discussed and some ac- tion taken, Every citizen is urged to attend the meeting next Monday night, especially those who signed pe- titions for the street to. go one way or the other. Between now and, Monday evening the Pioneer would be pleased to re- ceive. signed communications in re- gard to.the route of the street. We believe that the council is desirous of securing the best route and to abide by the decision of the people. ‘What is your opinion, Mr. Citizen? Write to the editor of the Pioneer and tell him. . PREPAREDNESS, “Although three years haye elapsed since, Mr. Wilson became president, although twenty months have elapsed since the cataclysm of the World War showed the infinite folly and wickedriess of not making ready and being ready to protect ourselves— not one thing has yet been dome,” writes Theodore Roosevelt in the Met- ropolitan. magazine. He adds: ““We are not stronger by a gun or a man than we were at the outbreak | of the great war. Relatively to the rest of the world our navy has gune' rapidly and steadily back during, these last three years, and our armyi likewise.
