It contains Itasca * lake, the source of the Mis- * sissippi, but the ‘“ultimate * source,” Hernando de Soto * lake, lies just across the bor- % der in Becker county. x x kA KAk kA A kA Ak Ak ok ok kkkk ko k ok kkok ok * KKK KKK KKK K KKK THE TIMBER SCANDAL Minnesota has never protected its timber property as a private individ- ual would have done, thus the recent disclosures of timber looting. From the time that lumbering first began, the state has been robbed persistently and systematically. Whether the la- test developments will lead to any-: thing is doubted. A sweeping probe should be made, punishments ' for stealing dealt out and the system of checking so changed that looting would be impossible. The state's timber industry should be conducted on the same basis as a.good business of an individual. MUCH WORK Any man who wants to work this year can find an ‘opportunity in Northern ' Minnesota. The - lumber companies need’ over one thousand men for summer logging and the pay ranges from $35 to $60 a month with board. The Crookston Lumber com- pany needs hundreds of men at Kelli- her camps and it is finding difficulty in obtaining men. There is no rea- son therefore why any man should be idle this year. The lumber camps are clean and sanitary. ADVERTISING TURNED DOWN Again the Pioneer refused outside advertising on account of its compet- ing with local” “industry. In fact, nearly every -week many dollars ‘of advertising is refused. i The latest is a dairy products house operating in Northern Minnesota wanting to advertise for ¢ream and to sell dairy prodaects. Bemidji has a'good creamery and we are extending every effort towards boosting this institution. It is costing ‘Oanada mearly $6,000 an hour to'maintain its-army of 29,- 000 men training in its military’ dis- trict, according to /figures eompiled by military authorities. The amount for each month is’divided thus: *:Sal- aries, $1,750,000; food, $1,000,000; sundries, $1,600,000. This givesi a monthly total of: $4;250,000, 'which means $98 a minut The hand of war has now reached the Mutt and Jeff cartoons. Mutt and Jeff ‘are not fit companions for the Czar of Russia, the Russian em- bassy at Washington complained in a formal protest against the series of cartoons appearing in newspapers throughout the country. German-American notes and other kind of notes-appear to-be holding up affairs-this year. -Now-comes-the re- port that the Birehmont -Beach- hotel opening may be: held un onr.aceount of notes. Miss Emma Johnson left for Brain- erd Tuesday morning where she will spend a few days visiting with friends. The eighth grade of the Nymore sehool is holding a visiting day this afternoon for the mothers. Carna- tions were presented to the mothers and ice cream and cake was®served. The Sunday school of the Nymore Congregational church will give an Easter program Sunday. Carna- tions will be presented.
