At present residents of that avenue have no water supply—they have no water for fire protection. Stringent efforts should be made to give the people of that district water mains this year. They are deserving of it. Not alone will it give them fire protection, as well as drinking water, but it will give them lower fire insurance rates. Bemidji will soon be rerated under the new Min- nesota basic rate. The water mains should be installed so that the Irvine avenue residents can benefit by the new rate. DID HIS WORK WELL. The Bemidji Sentinel has been sold and Editor F. A. Wilson has retired from the newspaper game in Bemidji. The new owners are H. Mayne Stan- ton and Walter F. Marcum, both well known in Bemidji. They formerly were connected with the Pioneer. Under Editor Wilson, the Sentinel has been a prosperous and growing newspaper. He .can retire knowing that he did his work well. To the new owners of the Sentinel, we bid welcome and extend to them our best wishes. WHY WOMEN CAN'T VOTE Perhaps the real reason why men won’t let the women vote is a good one after all. It may be that they fear that the intelligence of the fair sex will be more than a match for them. At the University of Minnesota 17 women were elected to Phi Beta Kap- pa and only six men—a ratio of nearly three to one. Phi Beta Kappa is the honorary scholastic fraternity. Does that mean that woman is nearly three times as intelligent as man? Let mere man explain. A HOT PREDICTION. “Where the fire burns the hottest, there it will burn out first.”” This is the only idea of J. J. Hill, empire builder, of the date of the end of the European war. You can get a big, fat pencil tab * let for a nickle at the Pioneer office, and an extra big, fat ink paper com- position book for a dime. All the “kids” will want one when they see em.
