The Minnesota State Immigration commission has issued an attractive advertising pamphlet entitled North- eastern Minnesota. It is devoted ex- clusively to the description of the timber sections, or so-called cut-over lands which are found in Northeast- ern Minnesota, embracing territory from western Beltrami county across the state to Lake Superior and from the central line of Pine county north to the Canadian line. About 12,000 of these books will be distributed throughout the states of Iowa, Illi- nois, Indiana and Ohio. If you know of some prospective homeseeker see that he or she is sent a copy of this pamphlet. PUBLIC HEALTH ASSOCIATIONS Beltrami county should form a public health; association to assist the state public health association in carrying on 1its good work. To support the local organization the state will allow a percentage of the funds derived from the 'sale wof Christmas seals for local work each year. As a result of the 1915 seal campaign the Marshall County Pub- lic Health association collected $250. The Kandiyohi association $300, the Pennington association $300, Rice county $400 and Pine county $150. An association should be formed in this county immediately to carry on the 1916 seal campaign. GROUND HOG DAY. Next Wednesday is Candlemas day, better known in most parts of the country as Groundhog day. That day, according to popular supersti- tion, is a barometer for the remain- der of the winter and in some way the ground hog is given credit for playing the title role for this day. On that morning he is supposed to open his eyes, stretch himself and go out into the open for a look around. If he sees his shadow he goes back for another six weeks’ sleep, but if he does not see his shadow, he concludes the worst of the winter is over and stays out- side. NOT FOR DESTRUCTION. The signs that are being placed along the rural highways in this county are not placed for the pur- pose of being destroyed. Every cit- izen should make an earnest effort to see that the signs are preserved. The Bemidji Farmers’ clubs should appoint committees to see that no one destroys the signs. AN INJUSTICE. One of the biggest injustices of the Tudian treaty which prohibits the in- treduction of liquor into this terri- tory is that some of the violators are arrested and are made to pay the penalty, others are arrested and the cases dropped, and others for some reason or other are not arrested. SOME BATTLE HERE. The battles that are raging in Europe are nothing compared to the wordy battles that are taking place between Clearbrook and Bagley pa- pers. Both sides claim to have ‘“in- exhaustible resources” of forceful words. Editor, Daily News: I have writ- ten the following letter to Congress- man Lindbergh: Regarding the upper Mississippi reservoir system, the settlers and land owners in the 6th district would like to have you introduce a resolu- tion in congress at once, to the ef- fect as follows: To have the war department, or whoever has authority over the Po- kegama, Winnibigoshish and Leech Lake reservoir dams, start at once _|to let out the water gradually dur- ing February and March, so as to lower the level, if possible, three feet below the stage of last fall, and in this way, during the months of February and March, give the water powers from Grand Rapids to St. Paul the benefit of the surplus waters in these large reservoirs now during the time of the year when the natural flow of the Mississippi river is very Money to Loan on Improved Farms Plenty of Money for Good Applications Write Us if You Want a Loan No trouble to do business by mail Interstate Securities Co. A whole lot can be done towards co-ordination between the war de- partment, the water powers and the settlers without any new improve- ments being made at the different dams, and when later on it is found that such a co-operative work will prove beneficial, arrangements can be made to lower the channels or the gateways so that the winter level can be gradually controlled, ac- cording to the needs each winter. Quite a heavy frost came on last fall so that the swamps and the ground is well frozen, and with the deep snow that we already have, and prospects for a great deal more be- fore the first of April, the volume of the spring runoff this year will be quite large. OPSAHL, Chairman Development Committee, Bemidji Commercial Club. “INSPIRATION” AT REX THEATER NEXT SATURDAY “Inspiration,” the much talked of five-act Mutual Masterpiece, will be shown at the Rex theater Saturday. The rise to fame and fortune in Audrey Munson, famous - artist’s model, and the inspiration of many work of art throughout this country and abroad is woven into the screen pictures. Miss Munson is widely known as the ‘“Panama-Pacific girl,” having posed for many of the pieces of statuary at the Panama-Pacific ex- position. The story, much of the locale of which is laid in New York, deals with Miss Munson’s arrival in the metrop- olis, her inability to find work, dur- ing which she all but starved to death and finally an accident—a fortunate one in this instance—which resulted in her securing her first step on the Rex THEATRE Rex PLEASING PHOTO PLAYS FRIDAY-=Carolyn Birch, Rose Tapely and other Vita- graph players in “HEREDITY?’ a Broadway Star feat- ure in three parts.
