J. A. A. BURNQUIST. The withdrawal of James A. Pet- erson from the field of Republican candidates for governor, although it still leaves Messrs. Lindbergh and Iverson in the field, without reflec- tion on these two men, means that Governor J. A. A. Burnquist will he the next nominee of his party at the primaries. Governor Burnquist measures up to the full responsibilities of the office. Mr. Peterson’s statement in with- drawing from the race is as fol- lows: Although I have not announced my candidacy for the Republican nom- ination for governor at the next pri- mary, it was generally understood throughout the state that I intended to be such candidate. The most im- portant thing to be accomplished in the state of Minnesota and the nation during this year is to reunite the Republican party and gain control of the state and national govern- ments. In order to do that we must place party and state patriotism above personal considerations. The sad removal by death of our late Governor Hammond has made Mr. Burnquist, Republican, governor of the state. Mr. Burnquist is a man against whose record nobody can take any exception. It is true he is a young man, but Mr. Burnquist has ability, integrity and competency, and I can see no reason why the Re- publicans of the state should not rally around him as the next Republican candidate for governor. What all true and loyal Republicans want is harmony and a good candidate. Mr. Burnquist’s nomination will furnish both. I want to say to my loyal friends throughout the state that I appreciate very much their efforts in my behalf and I thank them for the good will they have showed towards me. Nevertheless, I feel it my duty to come out at this time and declare that I shall support Mr. Burnquist for nomination and election and do all in my power to see that the Re- publican party is victorious, both in the state and the nation. I sincerely hope that the Republicans through- out the state will see this in the same light that I do. THE FIRE WHISTLE. The firemen are within their rights when they ask that the fire whistle be blown at night in case of fire un- der the new alarm system. Under the new system each fireman will be notified individually in case of fire. If the fire whistle is blown hun- dreds of people crowd around the fire and interfere with the firemen. In several cases in the past firemen and others have been injured on account of erowds interfering with the work of the firemen. Automobiles have been left in the middle of the street directly in the way of the fire truck and firemen. The firemen have the right plan for fires in the down town districts. One fireman will be detailed to tele- phone the owner of the property on fire. The owner is the only one that need know of the fire. In case of a fire which endangers a block or which gets beyond control the fire ‘whistle will be blown and then every citizen will know that there is a se- rious fire and that his help may be necessary. It is up to the firemen to decide for themselves. LEAP YEAR. It is all right, boys. Cherished singleness will not be endangeréd by American girls, even though it is leap year. New York leaders have agreed on that point though they differed on the propriety of leap year pro-’ posals. Mrs. Julian Heath, president of the housewives’ league of New York, in an interview, said: to young'men. T di erican girls will ever: ing. e ‘“‘Proposing by young women is de- cidedly improper and utterly out of the question. The American girl, you know, wants to be won. She does not think of winning a husband. And the young man is mighty glad to win her.” 5 So there you are. Come out of the trenches, boys. There is no dan- ger. AGAINST PEOPLE’S WISHES. The action of a member of the county commissioners voting against the appropriation of $250 to assist the Northern Minnesota Development as- sociation in its excellent work in Northern Minnesota, and thereby de- feating the appropriation, we believe to be against the wishes of the people of Beltrami county. That much good is being accom- plished for the county by the asso- ciation is very evident. It is one of the few means for advertising the county and to take care of the in- terests of the county. It is regretable, in our belief, that the interests of the people have been defeated. Unless the supremé court reverses the decision of the lower court, In- ternational Falls will have to re- main “dry” under the county option law. Think of a “falls” being ““dry.” BACKACHE IS DISCOURAGING But Not So Bad If You Know How to Reach the Cause. Nothing more discouraging than a constant backache. Lame when you awaken, pains pierce you when you bend or lift. It’s hard to work or to rest. Backache often indicates bad kidneys. Bemidji people recommend Doan’s Kidney Pills. Read this case: Oliver Gordhamer, carpenter, 1200 Dewey Ave., Bemidji, says: “I was stiff and lame in the morning and it hurt me to bring any strain on my back. I believe it was heavy lifting and hard work that brought on the trouble. I was handicapped in doing my work, especially stooping or lift- ing. Three or four boxes of Doan’s Kidney Pills strengthened my back and made me well. I have had no trouble since.” Price 50c, at all dealers. Don't simply ask for a kidney remedy—get Doan’s Kidney Pills—the same that Mr. Gordhamer had. Foster-Milburn Co., Props., Buffalo, N.
