Points That Indicate Animals of Good Milking Qualities. Those beginuers who expect to fol- low dairying cannot begin too soon to study the dairy type of animal. Conformation means much in the pro- duction of milk, says the Kansas Farmer. The whole makeup of the eow, from he: nose to the tip of her tail, contribu es something to dairy type. F. H. Scribner of Wisconsin, in writing in th: Jersey Bulletin, says a celebrated br:eder once remarked to him that if e could see an animal’s head he would not need to see more, as the head would deteymine the rest of the body. This is true to some extent, as a me- dium sized, angular body is usually as- !sociated with a1 medinm ‘sized angular The Ayrshire cow has a strong, healthy body with a superabun- dance of vitality and vigor, is rarely sick and almost never has any dis- ease of udder or teats. The Ayr- shire has never laid m to being at the head of the dairy herds for butter producing, but the official records made by the experiment stations during the p few years would indicate that she is a most profitable butter cow and second to none. The cow shown is an Ayr- shire. head. The short. compact head is nearly always as ated with a corre- spondingly cowmpact body or, in other words, with the beely type. A broad mouth in any type of animal is indica- tive of good feeding qualities, and as this is an important consideration in the dairy animal, this type of mouth should be sought. This, in connection with a bright, open eye, with a‘good distance between the eyes and a strong, muscular jaw, would be almost an ideal head for a good dairy cow. The head should be connected with the body by a rather long, thin neck, free from any tendency to meatiness. The old idea that the body should be of extreme angularity is not held as strongly by dairymen of experience at the present time. This type of body often was associated with a lack of constitution or of vigor. and when the animal was put to the test for large production it lacked the stamina to carry it through. i A cow’s capacity for handling fced is of the greatest importance. Mr. Scrib- ner says, “A large barrel in a cow is compared to a large storehouse for a manufacturing institution—a place where material is stored for manufac- turing purposes—and a cow should have a good capacity of body, for it takes a lot of feed to make a lot of milk.” The special organs of milk produc- tion must not be overlooked. The ud- der must be capacious and well at- tached to the body, extending well for- ward and well back. The conforma- tion of the hind quarters of the highly productive dairy cow must be such as furnishes a place for an udder of large size. The udder should be free from fleshiness and covered with soft, pli- able skin. The teats should be of good size and well placed i order to make the work of milking wasy. The milk veins in the big producing cow are usually prominent. Their size indi- cates the amount of the blood flow that passes through the udder, and, since this is directly related to milk production, it is a good point to ob- serve. i WARTS ON CATTLE. Method of Treatment For Removal of Common Skin Blemishes. When warts are so located as to permit caustic treatment, the most powerful remedy for removing them is nitric acid or sulphuric acid, says Kimball’'s -Dairy Farmer. With a feather or a swab the warts should be | touched with the acid in a manner so careful that the hair and skin sur- | rounding the warts will not be burned. Two or three applications of the acid will remove the warts, and following | the removal lard or carbolated vase- | line should. be applied to soften the scar and hasten the 'growth of hair. Where warts appear on the udder and teats this treatment is too severe. In its stead we would advise the use [|'of one part salicylic acid mixed with seven parts of collodion. This may be painted on the warts and allowed to dry. In two or three days the dead scab should be removed and the warts again treated. By following this sug- gestion the ‘warts will soon disappear without injuring the flow of milk in the meantime. When to Feed Silage. It is safe to start feeding the corn from the silo at any tlme. It is not necessary to permit it to stand before feeding. The corn at the time of cut- ting is just as good a feed as when it is cured in the stilo, % Take advantage of a want ad.
