EEREK XXX R KKKE * “THE DANCING GIRL” x * AT GRAND TONIGHT * KRR KKK KRR KKK KK KY MISS FLORENCE REED. “The Dancing Girl” might have been written for the camera, so full of action and picturesqueness is every scene, the colorful exteriors of the rocky coast of “The Isle of Endel- lion” contrasting with the rich in- teriors of the elegant home of the profligate Duke of Guiseberry, under whose patronage the dancing girl lives for a time; and there is the dramatic comparison of the sober life of the grave Quakers on the lonely island with the gay life of London society and the bright Bohemia of the singers and artists, with whom the Quaker girl, Drusilla, mingles when she becomes the favorite of the Duke. Perhaps the greatest inei- dent of the play is the famous “stair- case scene,” where Drusilla, at the zenith of her fame, having come to dance before the Duke’s own family, declares to her amazed and angry old Quaker father, who comes in search of her, that she wants to be “the topmost rose on the topmost bough, and live in sunshine,” and is crushed by the terrible wrath of a father’s curse. Tottering for a moment be- neath her father’s censure, she faints, and falls the length of the grand staircase, and awakes from conscious- ness, knowing at last the havoc she has made of her life and the shame she is to her people. The tragedy of this is followed by the splendid scene in which occurs the meeting cf penitent Drusilla with the nobleman whom her extravagance has ruined, on the lonely coast of Endellion where {both have come to seek death, and where they decide, instead, to re- lbufld their shattered lives and to share a newer, purer life. The “Dancing Girl” will be shown at the Grand theater tonight. Home made taffy and peanut candy. Mason.) * bel United Press Staft * * Correspondent. * KKK KKK ERK XX K KX K Efforts of the Russians to resume the offensive against Marshal von Hindenburg are, in all probability, not beéing conducted on a major scale. Nowhere else along the Russian front are the Slavs developing se- rious activity. In the central era, about the Pripet marshes and east- ern Galicia, the recent offensives have died down. This quietude of the Slavs came at a time when re- ports were being circulated from Tokio that large additional supplies of munitions made in Japan have been forwarded to Russia. Neverthe- less, no effort is being made to use the new supplies against the Ger- mans. In all probability, the inactivity along the eastern front is due to the organization and equipment of the new Russian army, which is reported to be preparing to invade Bulgaria. Every consideration of military strategy and diplomatic finesse em- phasizes the need of creating a Rus- sian expedition for the Balkans and of equipping it lavishly, Not other- wise can Rumania be persuaded to enter the war with the Allies, and Rumania’s help has become essential if the Russians hope ever to expel the Teutons from Slav soil. . ‘While much secrecy prevails con- cerning the ultimate efforts. of’ the czar to gain ground, reports are cir- culated that plans of Russian in- tervention are rapidly being com- pleted. The most significant con- firmation of these rumors is the per- sistent feebleness of the Slav assaults against the German lines at a time when the Teutonic strength in Russia has been weakened for the greater success of the Serbian operations.
