Some times you walk into a store and a clerk jumps to be the first to wait upon you. He is there to sell goods and work never bothers him. He is wililng to take down half the |] goods in the store in his efforts to please you. He makes sales and will rise i nlife. But there is another class of clerks. They let you hunt belthem up when the boss is not around, show you as few goods as possible, and are not at all bothered if you walk away without finding what you want. -They get their salaries just the same—it is only the boss who loses. They will always be clerks— just clerks. danelles the British have gained 300 yards, says a morning paper. In our issue today there are sey- era larticles on Northern Minnesota and Beltrami county ,published in connection with “Newspaper Week,” which- editors have arranged to ex- ploit, in printer’s ink, the state’s in- terest, to show what Minnesota is and 1 |#hat it _has. The reasons why an intended home- steader should come to Beltrami county to make his home are as fol- lows: 1—TIts fertile soil and long sum- mer sunshine, backed by good farm- ers, will broducé as much per acre (if not more) of most root, grass and grain crops as any county in the Union. 2—1It is the biggest labor mart in the state, outside of the Twin Cities and Duluth. 3—1It offers the largest acreage of fertile, free homestead lands of any county in the Union outside the arid and ‘semi-arid belts. 4—1Tt offers 500,000 acres of beau- tiful lakes and rivers teeming with fish (brain .and muscle, food) given free by nature for the catching. For every 100 acres of fertile land there gre 25 acres of lakes containing free food and pleasure. 5—Not any rough, rocky or waste land. 6—A county that, when developed, will flow with milk and honey. 7—Land of good health, education, prosperity, progress and happiness. 8—Home. Motorization of the rural free de- livery system in the United States has been started with more than 250 auto routes established between July 1 and today, and 250 others to be put in operation by Deec. 1, the postoffice department announced. Better service for less money to the public and better positions finan- cially and otherwise for the carriers, are the reasons upon which the de- partment based the motored-mail- route policy. There were Oct. 11, these auto routes already running: Arkansas, 1; ‘California, 23; Colo- rado, 2;, Delaware, 1; District of Columbia, 2; Florida, 13; Georgia, 68; Illinois, 3; Indiana, 14; Iowa, 24; Kansas, 3; Louisiana, 1; Missis- sippi, 2; Nebraska, 1; Oklahoma, 91; Pennsylvania, 15, and Texas, 24. By Dec. 1, there’ll be 14 in Ala- bama; Arkansqs, 4; California, 29; Colorado, 3 ;Delaware, 20; District of Columbia, 22; Florida, 22; Geor- gia, 127; Illinois, 3; Indiana, 14; Ok- lahoma, 156; Oregon, 1; Pennsylva- nia, 16, and Texas, 59. Burleson says these autos will im- prove the farmer’s mail and express facilities. He says time schedules are better and weather doesn’t affect autos so much. He says an auto can do 50 to 60 miles a day, regular schedule. He’s going to pay these auto car- riers $1,800 a year and make them supply their own cars and uniforms. He’s going to adopt a regular style of auto and uniform. Carriers on ‘wagon routes get only $1,200. There’s carrier in Kansas using an auto on a 30-mile route who’s been getting $1,200 and who’s going to get $1,800; and he says the raise will more than meet his expenses, even when a good many miles have been added to his route.
