Many of these salesmen are going to call on you, Mr. Retailer. Here are a few suggestions by which you might drive home a few pertinent ‘“home town” points to them. Ask them what they will do to help you sell the goods they want you to buy of them. Ask them if their firm is going to advertise their goods in the news- papers of this city. If they reply “no,” ask them why not? Tell them it is necessary for them to create the demand in this city, among your customers, for their line of goods; otherwise you cannot push their line in preference to those of manufacturers and jobbers who do create this demand. Tell them the best way to create the demand is to advertise in the local newspapers; that your custom- ers read the newspapers; that you yourself advertise in them; and that you are not willing to spend your money te make their particular lines popular in this town and later have them take the line away from you and give it to your competitor. Tell them that you favor goods which are advertised in your local newspapers, because you find it more profitable to do so. ‘When you have put these argu- ments up to a salesman, and he, in turn, has put them up to his house without results, it’s time for you, Mr. Retailer, to connect with a LIVE house to do business with. RIFLE PRACTICE SILLY ? “This instant!” (Eva Marshall Shontz fervidly and dramatically shot the 'words at the International Peace : conference delegates when the con- vention-opened in San Francisco: to- day) “58 per cent of the habitable globe is swept by war! “Of the billion, seven humdred and twenty-one million human beings on this:planet a bilHon of them are mur- dering each .other! “Frem -August to July the war cost the world-eighteen and a-half-billion dollars. “From August to-July, two million and a quarter of human beings were slaughtered by their fellows, and nearly, five million more were butch- ered so they will never be real men again. “Such incomprehensible Such unbelievable massacre! “T'll tell you what it’s coming to if the United States follows Europe's 40 -yesars’ of preparedness: for war!
