VAIL, Owner der way on Oct. 8. Friday Best Day. By starting the series on Friday, the magnates not only would.be fa- voring fandom; but ‘would be finan- cially helping themselves. Two games could thus be played in one city with- out a layoff and Sunday be utilized for traveling to the other, Wwhereas, if .the getaway is on Saturday, but one game might be played in the first city. That means more railroad fare and additional expenses, not only for the fans, but for the magnates. One reason why Boston is favored to get the first games is the enor- mous seating capacity of the new Braves park. Close to 50,000 spec- tators can be crowded into the plant, which is twice'as many as could be packed ‘in the Philly park. No Real Advantage. There is no advantage to be gained or lost by either team. What little edge the Red Sox would have by playing at home would be offset by the familiarity of the Phillies with the National league park. The field is comparatively. new to both clubs. The coming world’s series: prom- ises to evolve itself into a pitchers’ battle from the very start. On the one side, Alexander, on the other, five of the best pitchers in the Amer- ican league—Joe Wood, Dutch Leon- ard, George Foster, Ernie Shore and Babe Ruth. Grover is Best Hurler. There isn’t much question but that the Great Grover is a better chucker than any of the five, but the trouble is there isn’t five of Grover. If there was, there probably wouldn’t be any National league left. Fives’ Average .700. Bill Carrigan’s prize quintet has won in the neighborhood of 80 games for him this year. Each will wind up the season with a percentage hov- ering around the .700- mark. The average for the five will total over .700. = Moran Has Staff. Against this crowd of winners, Irish Pat Moran has to offer—Alex- ander, Mayer, who has been a hard worker this season—not quite so sue- cessful as the Boston flingers, but still good enough to be reckoned with; Demaree, an in-and-outér who pitches world series ball one day and tall ‘grass variety the next; Rixey, a 500 worker; Chalmers, a veteran undoubtedly of worth, but of doubt- ful success, and an Indian gent by the name of Tincup who can scarcely be counted on to comprise the bal- ance of the staff. . Alexander in First Game. It is practically a certainty that Moran will pitch Alexander the first game. Who to shoot against him is probably causing Bill Carrigan sev- eral sleepless hours. ‘“‘Smokey Joe” Wood? The smokey one, if he’s right, undoubtedly would give the Great Grover a battle from the word g0, but Joe hasn’t been worked very ‘hard of late. Some said it.was be- cause Boston was holding him in readiness for the Big Clash; others contended that it was because Wood was ailing—that it was because he never had fully recovered from the illness that temporarily ended his meteoric career after the 1912 world’s series. Probably Carrigan himself is the only one who knows. ~Certain- ly, fandom at large doesn’t. Boston Has Advantage. Granting that Alexander wins the first game, and -thereafter works every other day, Boston’s advantage in-the pitching department still is great. For it is doubtful whether even Alexander, as great as he.is, can work every othér day and win his game. Not only would the physical strain be “terrific, but the mental strain would be even greater. 0dds Against Grover. In Leonard, Carrigan has one of the best, if not the best left-hander in the game. The odds are against Grover, and if he wins out against the Carrigan clan, even the lustre of the great Rube Waddell will be shared by the Quaker hurler. North Dakota, at MINNESOTA AND NORTH DAKOTA CLASH TODAY Minneapolis, Minn., Oct. 2.—With not in the lineup, Minnesota went against North Dakota at the North- rop field this afternoon. ‘““Shorty” Long, former Minneapolis high school football player, was ex- pected to go in for quarter for the Gophers this afternoon. Supreme confidence in winning the game from the Flickertails with the use of any sort of a lineup, and fear that using their best might show their hand to their hated enemy, Illi- nois, the Minnesota team did not make great preparations for the con- flict with the North Dakota team to- day. NATIONAL SHOOT OPENED TODAY Jacksonville, Fla.,, Oct. 2.—The great National Shooting tournament opened today on the state range here. Teams were present from all states but six, and shooters from Cuba and Canada are entered in the indi- vidual shoots. A feature 1is the number of civilian shooters this year owing to the recent organization of civilian rifle clubs. Several improve- ments have been made in the method of scoring and unusual markmanship is expected. The meet will last three weeks. Telephone 474 Garage C. W. JEWETT CO.
