Our peo- ple from every point of the compass have been passing through a period of depression which in almost any other country would have resulted in a panic, but the American people have just gritted their teeth and forged to the front with redoubled energy and determination. The spirit of “I Will” just seems to have been planted in every breast, with the happy result that prosperity on a par with our record breaking crops will soon be our heritage. It gives us a mighty good feel, and we pass it on to you. Revelations of the Road. Human nature and human char- acter have a way of revealing them- selves in any and all circumstances. Just as murder will out, so the lines of the human character are quite easy traceable from the conduct and the speech of men and women. Human character revealed itself most unmistakably in that episode of the man who had fallen among thieves on the road to Jericho, and who was rescued by a good Samaritan only after a priest and a Levite had passed by on the other side. In the same manner, the character of those who motor on country roads is re- flected strikingly in their attitude toward fellow motorists. There is the motorist who hogs more than his share of the road; there is the mo- torist who goes rushing wildly by, regardless of peril to life and limb; and there is that other motorist who never stops to see if any help may be given to the traveler who has had a blowout or who has encountered engine. trouble. On the other hand, glory be, there is the motorist who gives a generous share of the road -to the man who passes the other way; and the driver who is cautious in going around skittish horses; and the motorist who will get down out of his car and dirty his hands and his collar, if need be, in helping a fellow traveler re- pair his car; and the traveler who will not hesitate to give a pedestrian a lift if it is at all.possible to do so. If He were on earth today, Jesus Christ would find more than enough material for another ‘“good -Samar- itan” parable among the motor tour- ists of the country, though today, we believe there would be two Samarit- ans for every Levite and every'priest. ——St. Paul Dispatch. MORE AND MORE EXISTENCE OF TURKISH . EMPIRE IS MENACED By HENRY WOOD. (United Press Staff Correspondent) Constantinople—(By courier to Dedeagatch and thence by mail.)— July 14.—More and miore, as the ex- istence of the empire becomes men- aced more and more does the Turk- ish police department, the one and only department of government for which the Turk has ever shown a real genius, increase its activities. The Turks say they have a million and a quarter of men under arms. One would be tempted to believe they were referring to the number of po- licemen. Recently complaint was made to Enver Pasha that there was too much surveilliance of the Scorpion, the United States ship now anchored in the Bosphorus at the foot of the American College for Girls. “But it is the duty of the police to watch everything, to watch ev- erybody,” replied the 33-year old minister of war. “Every 20 min- utes of the day and night a patrol boat passes my house. Iam watched like all the rest.” This sensation of being constantly under the eyes of the police produces on the part of the foreigner here a degree of caution. He never knows at what instant a chance word which he may utter may be overheard by a secret policeman and in consequence of which he may be charged with the utterance of trea- son. Only a few days ago Colonel Leip- siz, the military attache of the Ger- man embassy, was killed. He was a magnificent ‘type of the German of- ficer, over six feet tall, a gentleman both in appearance and in actuality, known and loved by everyone. The official announcement said that while changing from uniform to civilian dress in a little railway station up- on his return from the Dardanelles, his revolver had been accidently dis- charged, the ball entering his fore- head. There was scarcely a foreigner in all Constantinople who did not see in this mysterious death the culmina- tion at least in part of his convic- tions that sooner or later the Turks will turn on the German officers now stationed at Constantinople. But not a single person in all Constantinople once expressed this suspicion. “They say it was accidental,” is what everyone said to his most inti- mate friend and this remark silence alone followed. A word more ut- tered might have been overheard by a secret police and the individual Splendid for Constipation. ‘“‘About a year ago I used a couple of -bottles of Chamberlain’s Tablets and found them to be a splendid rem- edy for indigestion and constipation,” writes C. ' That the position of the Gennans i at Constantinople is becoming daily more delicate there can be no ques- tion. I know personally that even in the case of the death of Colonel Leipsiz the Turkish censor insisted that the official announcement as prepared by the German ambassador be submitted before being telegraph- ed. to Berlin and that the original text was altered.. Many German of- ficers after their day’s work at the ‘““Quartier General” change to civil- ian’s dress before appearing on the streets in the evening. German and Austrian civilians are leaving by every train. Part of those who left on the same train I did, left cursing the country which had joined them in war.
