Cap- tain MacLachlan’s boat, the_City. of Bemidji, was chartered for the occa- sion and the party, 62 in number, left the city dock at 8 o’clock and went to the outlet, across the lake, where supper was enjoyed at the pa- vilion. Games and music furnished the amusement for the evening and before returning to the city, a trip was made to the head of the lake to see the new Birchmont Beach summer hotel, which was all lit up and makes a pretty sight from the lake. The party returned to the eity| about 11:30. Whale Curiosities. Little is really known about -his whaleship. This is surprising, consid- ering he is such an interesting subject. The blue cr sulphur bottom whale is the largest animal living today. Spec- imens have measured eighty-seven feet in length, which- in all probability. weighed about seventy-five tons.. Odd- ly enough, although the mouth will permit twelve men to stand in it the, throat is only nine inches in diameter. These particular whales feed on mi-) nute shrimps—about three-quarters. of. an inch in length—and they probably.| never touch fish while they can obtain these. From the inside of one of these;| whales five barrels of shrimps were; taken. The sperm whale possesses spermaceti in liquid form in the up- per’portion of its head. From one of these whales twenty barrels of sper- maceti were taken out of the “case.” This same type of whale also yields ambergris, that valuable substance used so ¢ nsively in the manufac- ture of st perfumes.
