Northern Minnesota hustlers, Northern Minnesota newspapers and the Northern Minnesota Development association have a big work ahead of them in the next year and a half, is the reminder of the Duluth Herald. But it is a task so splendidly worth while, and one that will work so directly and so certainly for the greater wealth and greater glory of the whole commonwealth, that sure- 1y everybody is going to get behind it with vim and vigor. The task is that of bringing about the ratification by the people a year from next November of the reclama- tion revolving fund amendment to the Constitution, which authorizes - the legislature to set apart $250,000 out of the permanent state funds to be used as long as it is needed in de- veloping state lands. The amendment of two years ago, with a provision added for the par- tial clearing of cut-over state lands in addition to the old provision for building roads and .firebreaks, —has been resubmitted, and it will come up for decision at the 1916 state elec- tion. The 1914 amendment came near carrying, but it didn’t get quite votes enough—because there wasn’t quite work enough put in on it. That’s a defect that’s easily reme- died—and it’s up to Northern Min- nesota to remedy it. This amendment is of far vaster importance than many people have Tealized as yet. The amount provided for—a quar-|] ter of a million—seems small, but it is as good as ten times that. at once, and it will be replenished as ‘the improved state land is sold. It is a revolving fund, continuing so long as it is needed. Its ‘use ‘will be an investment that “will ‘return ‘a great. direct profit to the state funds, but a much greater indfrect profit thruugh development | and settlement. The 1914 amendment failed for lack of proper effort to pass it. The 1915 amendment, which is better because it includes rpartial clearing of state tracts so that set-| tlers-can'get a living from the start, will fail only if' there is again a lack of’ proper effort to pass it. It ‘meeds an edueational campaign| ~+a'eampaign to educate the people ‘of‘Southern' Minnesota into a realiza ‘tion of the -benefits it will bring to the whole :state, and 'a campaign to: educate.the: people of Northern Min-=| nesota to vote for it and to inducé: their neighbors to vote for it. Today is nome too soon to begin that campaign. . KR EEKE KKK KKK KK * STATE FAIR OFFERS e * $1,800 FOR POULTRY ¥ AR KRR K K KRR KK The sum of $1,800 in cash prizes is to be awarded at the Minnesota State Fair poultry show, ‘September 6 to 11, insuring one of the best ex- hibits of fowls in the country this year. The increased interest in poultry in the Northwest, which pro- duces annually over $100,000,000 worth of poultry and poultry pro- ducts, is said to be the cause for the unusual prospect. An almost exclusive feature of the Minnesota State Fair poultry show for several years has been the at- tention pdid to pens and flocks of fowls. Pens of fowls, for which premiums of $5, $3 and $2 are offered consist of one male and four females. Flocks of fowls, for which. prizes of $10, $8 and $6 are offered in the case of the ten leading varieties, con- sist of one male and eight females. Premiums for pens and flocks are given to make the show as practical as possible, and gain the interest of the thousands of ordinary breeders. Cash prizes of $3, $2 'and $1 are offered on single birds in nearly all instances. There are $72 each for ducks and turkeys, and - $48 for geese. Special display prizes of $10, $6 and $4 are offered to exhib- itors from Ramsey county, Hennepin county, all other parts of Minnesota, and other states than- Minnesota, re- spectively, for the largest number of fowls shown. . All entries close Sat- urday, August 28. Leslie Parlin, superintendent for over 30 years, will —continue in charge. Premium lists will be sent on application to “Secretary John C.
