The success from fertilizing is due to two facts, the readiness with which | wojpg the fertilizer gives up its nutrient parts |- and the ability of the land to hold these nutrient parts and keep them from being washed away before taken up. Loamy or so called rich soils_hold their nutrient part in readiness because there is sufficient vegetable matter to make it ight. This gives a chance for the air to aid the germs of fertilization to increase and multiply, to prepare the substances to be taken up by the plants. < Heavy ciay soll produces slowly until the vegetable matter increases. Sandy solls unless well supplied with vegeta- ble matter permit the fertilizer to filter away beyond reach of plant roots be- fore the plants get all out of it. For general purposes stable manures give best results all around. They have the vegetable matter as well as the nu- trient qualities. In some kinds, such as cow, sheep manures, etc., the nu- trient qualities are more quickly ‘avail- able than in horse manure. Horse ma- nures, as usually procurable, have a tendency. to be either all straw, which is more of a mulch than a nutrient, or dry burned out, due to lack of proper and the streets. on farms. Grower. The question arises, Where does this % vast amount of water come from? It 18 assumed that wany city trees petish from lack of water owing to water tight. pavement and water tight side- In answering this question it must not be forgotten that the roots of any tree, especially the elm tree, extend a long distance, :thus encroaching upon the lawn sofls adjacent, the sidewalks Notwithstanding these explanations we wonder at the capacity of this big tree to gather moisture to its roots, partly roofed over by city pavements. It illustrates the fact. that there is much yet to be learned about root growth and tree growth generally. After being told that one tree throws into the air 260 barrels of water every summer’'s day we may get some idea of the reason for the coolness of the air in the forest or beneath shade trees growing in the field or upon our lawns. Shade trees are indeed more productive of coolness on a summer’s day than would be a . gigantic fan. — Fruit It The houses This hill is the most interesting fea- ) What appears as a solitary crag is in reality a castle, the rooms, fortifications, etc., beingcut out of the ‘solid rock and- forming a fortress practically impregnable those days. The same practice can be followed with established trees. Care should be taken that the fertilizer does mot touch the bark or roots. Remember, trees take up food with their fibrous roots, and fibrous roots usually are near the ends of big supporting roots, and tree roots usmally go as far out- ward as the branches extend. This tells where to apply fertilizer. It does no more harm to feed your trees, etc., once a year than it does to treat yourself right. The old, foolish argument that forest trees are not fertilized will seem more foolish if you give it a second thought. There 1S no reason for broadcasting manures in the vegetable garden.
