R A T RS DU S W — — S— *son homestead, spread on fine, fresh By HAL SHERIDAN. Another baseball league made its 1915 bow for the public favor. The American Association got under way today, on the heels of the National and American league debuts”of yesterday. Although harrassed by the Feds to some extent, the association was regarded as much stronger than last year. 'The strongest Fed rivalry was at Kansas City, although the Kaw- feds lost money last year. The association’s opening games today were: Louisville at Colum- bus; Indianapolis at Cleveland; Min- neapolis at Milwaukee and St. Paul at Kansas City. The Milwaukee brewers, 1914 champions, were again picked to be today one, two, three this year. Mike Can- tillon’s Millers’ were also much strengthened. The situation at Indianapolis was improved over last year, when the Fed team there won the pennant and then was transferred to Newark. The Louisville Colonels were generally picked as the runners-up in the op- ening race, with the Saints again picked to fight out.the cellar cham- pionship with Kansas City or Cleve- land. Instead of long distance pool room recreation, eastern race fans will to- day get their first glimpse of paddock and betting ring when the northern spring racing season opens at the Havre De Crace track. An unusually stellar string of horses is entered for the big stakes, which are making the Havre De Grace track more popular annually. Horsey folk of Baltimore and Washington are particularly strong for the Havre De Grace course and excursion trains from both cities are generally crowded. Mr. Hanson has named his home- stead “The Best Place on Earth,” using at (he entrance a large Elks banner, appropriately signifying the name of his farm. On it he has much bireh, spruce, maple and other hardwood timber. A feast for kings was served the hungry “bunch” from town when they arrived. And hungry they were, too, because of delay in finding proper roads leading to the meeting place. : Real Maple Syrup. IF'resh, rich maple syrup right out of the kettles and made from sap drawn from maple trees on the Han- home-made bread comprised one of the courses fed the visitors. In ad- dition to this were lots of other good things to eat. After the meeting adjourned, speeches were made by E. A. Barker, C. E. Battles and W. L. Brooks, and a photograph was taken of the entire gathering. The next meeting will be held ut the home of George Geror on the second Wednesday in May to which a cordial invitation has been extended to the merchants of Be- midji. . . Hungary and Russia was outplayed in the realignment. The circum- stance arraigns Russian leadership the more severely because all advan- tages of transport was with the Slavs. The railway system on the Galician side of the Carpathians is far more available for rapid concentration of troops than are the lines on the Hun- garian side. Russians in Control. The former, which is under con- trol of the Russians, is measurably comparable to the German strategic railways of East Prussia. On the Hungarian side of the mountains, however, there is convergence of the permanent ways which run through mountain passes from different direc- tions at considerable distances apart. The Russian general staff thus had a positive advantage in railway communications such as that to which Petrograd has attributed von Hindenburg’s victories. Yet the Slavs were unable to make proper they succeeded in duplicating von Hindenburg's tactics. Unfortunately for France and England, military leadership is still woefully lacking in Russia, and the third Hungarian cam- paign of the Slavs is ending before it has really begun. When a man gets the bap- tism of the Holy Ghost there is not a single thing between him and God. He will love his neighbor as him- self. He will be willing to give all that he has to please God—time, money, loved ones, all. There is a satisfaction and happiness which fol- lows that is indescribable. Rev. The bersagleri is said to have its source in the brain of Napoleon, who once won a battle because he knew how fast every army in Europe marched. 3 ~ He figured that if the English step was 110 to the minute, the Russian, 115, and the Austrian, 120, and so on, and that his army marched at the rate of 130 steps to the minute, he |~ would arrive at a certain place be- fore the enemy. He did arrive first and because he did he won the battle. The Italians are said to have speeded up the bersagleri, making the double-quick step the ordinary one, because of the victory of Na- poleon.
