FRIDAY, APRIL 2, 1915. NEW TYPE OF PUBLIC WATERING STATION, Late Device For Quenching Thirst of Man and Beast. Public watering stations are what we in Somerville call our latest de- vices for the watering of man and beast, writes Frank E. Merrill, water sioner of Somerville, Mass., in the American City. They supplant the public horse troughs, which are believ- ed to be responsible for the rapidly spreading disease of glanders, and at the same time provide sanmitary bub- blers for human beings and drinking bowls for dogs. The keynote of the construction is simplicity. *The device may be de- scribed as being in its essential parts PUBLIC WATERING STATION AT SOMER- VILLE, MASS. a piece of twelve inch cast iron pipe set in the ground with its bell end up- ward, the face of the bell being twen- ty-nine inches above the sidewalk grade and the other end being a suffi- cient distance below the surface to ob- tain stability. A one inch service pipe from the street main makes into a two inch riser which comes up through the center of the standard and is held in position by a cast iron strainer rest- ing in the bell of the large pipe. This riser is capped with a side outlet cross standing twelve inches above the top of the bell end of the pipe, which forms a convenient ledge upon which to rest a pail while filling. Into one of the outlets of the cross is inserted a three-quarter inch self closing hose bibb, so that a hose line may be at- tached if needed for any purpose. Into two other outlets are inserted self closing plain bibbs, and into the out- let facing the sidewalk is fitted a bub- bler controlled by a self closing cock. In this condensed space are found. therefore, opportunities at once for three teamsters to draw water and for another one to obtain a refreshing draft for himself. Attached to the side of the twelve inch standard near the sidewalk grade is a bowl for dogs. This is kept sup- plied with fresh water by the drip of caught in a tunnel set underneath the strainer and conveyed through a small pipe into the dog bowl. The te from the faucets and a dog bowl is discharged into the interior of the twelve inch standard, which has a ce- ment bottom. at which point an open- ing allows the waste to escape into a drain pipe leading to the sewer. Un- der the bubbler is fastened a step at a convenient height for children to reach the water from that fixture. All the mater “used in the con- struction of this watering station are. with the exception of the castings for the strainer. dog bowl and step, such as are found in every water works shop or supply house. The cost of the outfit made up in a water works shop and ready to set in position will bhe found to be about $20. To this should be added about as much wmore for the cost of installing it. with supply and drainage connections. thus providing a pretty complete watering combination at a very moderate outlay of money. Paper Lifeboats. Rear Admiral Yokoyama of the Japa- nese navy has invented a collapsible lifeboat. or, rather, raft. made of pa- per. Having found a very tough paper Known as bashikirazu, made from mul- berry tree fiber. be sought for and dis- covered a chemical treatment to make it waterproof. After experiment bhe found that the best device was to take several pipelike bags and place them side by side as in a raft. As finally given forth it is a life raft quite im- mune from wreck and so collapsible that it could be stowed in a subma- rine and always be ready for use. Not Much Room For Argument. “You owe everything to your wife,” said the severe maternal relative, “Maybe 1 do.” replied Mr. Meekton. “Anyhow, she gets around. regularly every pay day and collects."”—Wash- ington Star. i Need any help?
