England’s Minigter to Vatican Well Known .in United States. Official announcement ‘is' ‘made of the appointment of Sir Henry Howard as British minister to the Vatican. Sir Henry is well known in the United States. He married an Ameri- can woman, Miss Cecilia Riggs, daugh- ter of the late George W. Riggs of ‘Washington, in 1867. She died in 1907. Sir Henry was an attache of the British legation at Washington when he met Miss Riggs. IN TWENTY-THREE YEARS Ne Colorado Miner Has Received Dam- ages for Injuries. Denver, Dec. 14—In twenty-thres years there has been not a single re- covery for damages against a coal company in the Third judicial district of Coloradp, which includes the South- ern Colorado coal fields, in case of accidents in the mines. This information was given the fed- eral industrial commission by J. J. Hendricks, distriet attorney for that district. He said the predecessor of the present district judge occupied the bench for six years and in that time no successful case against a coal eompany was permitted to go to the Jury. GARDNER REFUSED HEARING House Rules Committee Votes Down Demand of Representative. Butte, Mont.,, Dec. 14.—Valentine Kroff, wealthy pioneer, was found dy- ing in the streets of Butte from the effects of a fracture of the skull, suf- fered, it is believed, in a holdup.
